Area 51

[30.11.2009] berichtet über Oren Peli's "Area 51"...
Paramount Pictures has landed U.S. distribution rights to "Area 51," the Oren Peli-directed follow-up to the sleeper hit "Paranormal Activity." [...]
Peli had a much larger budget to work with on this extraterrestrial tale than he did for his ghost story, as sources said he brought the film in at a shade under $5 million.
Paramount made a high-seven figure commitment, said sources to become co-financier with Incentive Filmed Entertainment and the Aramid Entertainment Fund. The trio will be co-financing partners going forward on any sequels. [...]
Just as they did on "Paranormal Activity," Peli wrote and directed "Area 51" and Jason Blum is producing through his Blumhouse Productions banner. Room 101’s Steven Schneider, IM Global’s Ford and Amir Zbeda are executive producers.
Pic, which completed principal photography three weeks ago, was fully financed by Incentive and the Aramid Entertainment Fund. [...]
The film employs the "found footage" narrative structure that Peli used in "Paranormal Activity" to tell the story of three teens whose curiosity leads them to the notorious Area 51 portion of Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert.
Fueled by the strong grosses of "Paranormal Activity," "Area 51" was one of the brisk sellers at the American Film Market. It has sold internationally almost everywhere except Japan and certain Eastern European markets where talks are ongoing. Key buyers include Momentum in the U.K., Concorde in Germany, Equilatero/Warners in Spain, Village Roadshow in Australia, Alliance in Canada, Playarte in Brazil, Gussi in Latin America, RCV in Benelux and Svensk in Scandinavia.
Studio and financiers confirmed the deal and said they were pleased to be teaming once again on a film that hasn’t yet set a release date but will surely find its way to theaters some time in 2010.
"Moviegoers everywhere demanded to see Oren Peli’s spectacular debut and we are excited to show them what he’s created next," said Par’s Goodman. [...]
As Peli and Blum go into postproduction on "Area 51," the next deal to be made will be for another installment of "Paranormal Activity," which will once again be done through Paramount.

[12.11.2009] Bei Latino Review gibt es eine Kritik zum Drehbuch von Oren Peli's "Area 51"... Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
[...] The "script" for Area 51 reads much like I imagine the "script" for Paranormal Activity did. It's basically a scene-by-scene breakdown with a list of various props, actors, and the general interactions between the actors and their surroundings. There is no written dialogue, but within the action descriptions are general ideas that the actors will be using to improvise their lines with on set. Unlike Paranormal Activity's single location, Area 51 is far more expansive in its setting. [...]

Writer/director Oren Peli is set to start production next week on Area 51, his follow-up to the supernatural chiller Paranormal Activity which after creating exceptional underground notoriety since its production in 2007, is now in the early stages of its US release by Paramount.
The Area 51 storyline is a closely guarded secret but is reputedly centered around three teenagers whose curiosity leads them to the legendary and mysterious Area 51 Air Force base deep in the Nevada desert. Area 51 will, like Paranormal Activity employ a "found footage" narrative strategy. Though Peli will enjoy a significantly larger budget than the $11,000 he spent to make Paranormal Activity, he will continue to work with undiscovered actors.
Area 51 is produced by Jason Blum under his Blumhouse Productions banner, with Room 101's Steven Schneider and IM Global chief Stuart Ford serving as executive producers. The film was co-financed by Aramid Entertainment Fund and Incentive Filmed Entertainment, with IM Global handling worldwide sales and CAA co-repping the title in the U.S.
Paranormal Activity has enjoyed sell out midnight screenings in 33 cities over recent weeks and Paramount is set to expand the film to around the clock screenings in 40 cities this weekend.
Said Peli: "Actually, I'd rather not say anything about 'Area 51' except that I am very pleased to be working with the same team who have stood by me for the two or three years it took 'Paranormal Activity' to get into theatres."
Said Blum: "Oren has already proven that he has a unique gift for using technology and our inherent fear of the unknown to tell simple yet emotionally compelling stories. In this case his canvas is just a little larger."
Said David Molner, Chairman of both Incentive and Aramid Capital Partners: "Not since 'Blair Witch' has such innovative film-making set off such a stampede among young movie audiences. We are proud and privileged to be in business with Oren and Jason and our longtime partners at IM Global."
Said Ford: "We've already had a crazy ride with Oren and Jason on 'Paranormal Activity' that looks set to get even crazier. It's exciting to be launching into 'Area 51' with Oren just as a worldwide audience is discovering his thrilling debut."

[26.09.2009] In einem Artikel bei wird ganz nebenbei erwähnt, dass Regisseur Oren Peli ("Paranormal Activity") als nächstes Projekt "Area 51" realisieren wird...

Grant Morrison is knee-deep in aliens these days as he finishes up a script for Paramount called "Area 51." And while you’ve seen Area 51 depicted a number of different ways in television and movies over the years - from "Independence Day" to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" - this one, he said, will offer something new. "It’s a new take on the mythology," Morrison promised.
Morrison’s version is an adaptation of the Midway video game, in which a viral outbreak shuts down a research facility, the scientific and military personnel are locked inside under quarantine, and a small special forces unit led by the hazardous materials division investigates. In the game, the main character from HAZMAT discovers that the mutated virus controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility, and he has to solve several mysteries and uncover many conspiracies - including men in black to the Illuminati - to prevent the virus from being released and mutating life on Earth.
"That’s the existing idea," Morrison said, "and I have to get to the core of that, dismantle it, and make it work. It’ll be a totally different view of the aliens and the whole mythology."
Any more than that, Morrison couldn’t say - he had signed a non-disclosure agreement, after all. But we hear that not only will the "Area 51" game provide some of the settings and environments, but so will "BlackSite: Area 51," the game’s sequel. Some of the characters will be the same, but there will be new characters as well. [...]

The game features the voice talent of David Duchovny, Powers Boothe, and Marilyn Manson. "Today's top games must deliver a complete and engrossing entertainment experience," said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer at Midway, about the game. "By utilizing the voice talents of some of Hollywood's most recognizable names combined with stunning graphics and sound, 'Area 51' will deliver a polished experience in all phases on par with the best games available."

As Cole, players will delve into the massive levels within the confines of Area 51, discovering a deadly mutagenic side effect of the virus that controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility. Players will uncover the truth behind chilling conspiracies as they come across the remnants of the extraterrestrial crash at Roswell, alien autopsies, and the faked lunar landing. Cole must solve the enigma of Area 51 before the viral mutagen is released and irrevocably mutates all life on Earth.
Featuring online capabilities of up to 16 players, "Area 51" is the only action-packed 1st person shooter set in the U.S. government's most secret and secure military facility. Players' online "Area 51" experience will be enhanced with game modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Humans vs. Alien Mutant Team Deathmatch.

Streng geheim
Area 51 und die "Schwarze Welt"

Gebundene Ausgabe
253 Seiten (Oktober 2001)
