Verloren in einer geheimnisvollen Unterwasserstadt, einem gescheiterten Utopia, erbaut von ehrgeizigen Wissenschaftlern, muss der Held (evtl. Wentworth Miller, u.a. "Prison Break", "Underworld" und "Dinotopia") bis zum Äußersten gehen, um sich gegen die wahnsinnigen Bewohner und schrecklichen Wächter zu verteidigen - selbst all seine Waffen werden nicht ausreichen. Nur mit den mysteriösen Plasmiden - genetischen Modifikatoren, die übermenschliche Fähigkeiten verleihen - hat er eine Chance. Aber bald dämmert ihm, welchen Preis er dafür bezahlen wird...

Die geplante "BioShock"-Verfilmung wurde wegen Budget-Problemen gestoppt... Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (u.a. "28 Weeks Later") sollte dann Regie führen und der vormals dafür vorgesehene Gore Verbinski (u.a. "Fluch der Karibik"-Trilogie, "Ring") als Produzent fungieren... Abwarten...

BioShock creator and Irrational Games head Ken Levine recently spoke with IndustryGamers for an upcoming 'Better Know' and one of the quick questions we asked him was about the seemingly dead BioShock film and if any progress has been made.
The last we heard from Levine on the subject, he said that a movie is "definitely still in the conversation." We're not so sure if that's the case anymore, as Levine is laser focused on next year's BioShock Infinite release and he certainly has no wish to push for a Hollywood movie just for the sake of getting a movie for the franchise he built.
"We got very close to having it get made - we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there's no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made," Levine stressed to us. "For us and for Take-Two, it's really got to be something that will a) give the fans something that they want, and b) for those who don't know BioShock, really introduce them to something that is consistent with the game, and is it going to be a good representation of the game."
He added, "There are differences between games and movies, no doubt, but the movie has to draw from the same DNA in terms of the world and the story beats," then reiterating: "But you know, we don't have a need to get it made."
It's worth noting that Levine began his career writing screenplays, and he certainly has a keen creative eye, so if the BioShock movie ever becomes a reality and the deal enables Levine to properly consult with the director, we'd be optimistic for its chances to actually turn out well.

Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine talked to IndustryGamers about the possible BioShock movie based on the popular game franchise. Gore Verbinski was originally attached to direct, and then Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was hired to take on the project at Universal Pictures. Here's an excerpt from the interview:
"I think we're in the space now of building properties that are appealing to people, and there's a version of BioShock that makes a great game and there's probably a version of BioShock that makes a great movie. I think for us as a company, we don't have any need to get a movie made. We'd like to have a movie made, but it would have to be the right one, and we've had the opportunity to get it made and unless all the right pieces are in place – it's hard enough to get a movie made when all the right pieces are in place. If you don't start with the right pieces, you don't have a prayer. We've had a lot of great talks with great people about it. We got close to great people, but you always have to have all of those pieces in place and that's going to be very challenging. It's a moving puzzle, but I'm going to be continually talking to people about it. It's definitely something that's still in the conversation."
"BioShock Infinite," the third game in the series, is scheduled to hit stores in 2012.


[13.02.2011] CS! sprach mit Gore Verbinski über seine gecancelte "BioShock"-Verfilmung...
[...] Though he's no longer actively involved in the project, Verbinski also discussed his take on the videogame adaptation BioShock and why it failed to get off the ground.
"I couldn't really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating," he explained, "Alternately, I wasn't really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you're still shivering and going, "Jesus Christ!"... It's a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the pricetag is high. We just didn't have any takers on an R-rated movie with that pricetag."
Unlike Rango, which was very consciously not converted for 3D, BioShock, Verbinski added, is perfect for the format.
"[Bioshock] would be a great movie to do in 3D. I'd like to go into that world wearing a pair of glasses. I think in general, gaming is perfect for 3D. Anything where you're the protagonist. The kid in 'The Shining' on the big wheel, going around corridors. That's what 3D is perfect for. To make people feel on-edge." [...]


[12.09.2010] Quint von AICN machte kürzlich einen Besuch in Gore Verbinski's Büros und fragte den Produzenten Nils Peyron bzgl. der "BioShock"-Verfilmung...
[...] Peyron also put up with my needling for information on Bioshock, a film he was also producing with Gore Verbinski directing until the studio backed out.
They were building sets when the plug was pulled, one month away from shooting. There was a gleam in Peyron’s eye as he talked about this project. Gore was going to be shooting on real sets and doing as much in-camera as possible. I nodded in agreement. "If you’re going to use CG to create everything you might as well just play the video game," I added.
He agreed and went on to say it was going to be epic and said there was a crazy amount of jaw-dropping art they accumulated during pre-production... that he didn’t show me. Grumble-grumble-grumble. Oh, and Gore wanted to make it R-rated. And a hard R at that.
Fuck, I want to see that movie.
Peyron did say not to write-off a Gore Verbinski Bioshock. Gore still has the passion for it and sees enormous potential in the Bioshock world as a film franchise. We know that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) is currently attached with Verbinski producing. I’m sure that’s what he was referring to, but something in the way he was talking about it made it sound like it was still possible Gore might direct should the right situation present itself . Could just be my imagination. [...]


[01.09.2010] CVG liefert Neuigkeiten in Sachen "BioShock"-Verfilmung...
The Bioshock movie is still being actively worked on, according to game director Ken Levine.
Reports last month suggested that the Bioshock film might slip from grasp after the production ran into financial difficulty before it ever really got started.
"I will say that it is still an active thing," Levine has told DC radio station 106.7.
"It is something we are actively talking about and actively working on."
Levine went on to talk about the challenges of bringing Bioshock to the big screen calling it a "super, super challenge" (that's two times tougher than the mundane super challenge).
The game's director said that the main problem was transforming Jack from "a hand with a gun" to "a person who is going through some sort of progression through his life" while staying true to the original games.
Developer Irrational has recently left Rapture behind and launched Bioshock into the clouds with the announcement of Bioshock Infinite, which it's aiming to "blow gamers' minds" with.


[01.07.2010] IGN sprach mit Gore Verbinski über den Stand der Dinge in Sachen "BioShock"-Verfilmung...
[...] The long-gestating game-to-film stalled in recent months due to budgetary concerns, but Verbinski remains cautiously optimistic that the project will happen ... someday. "We're working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It's a really expensive R-rated movie," he explained. "So we're trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it's true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R."
Verbinski doesn't believe the mediocre performance of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time at the U.S. box office has dampened BioShock's chances of making it to the screen. "No, I think BioShock's a rare one because it's actually a great story," he said. "Me? I don't want to make movies based on videogames, but BioShock's the one Oedipal, crazy kind of -- it's just got really good bones, and we're really trying to figure out a way to make it work."
"We don't want to dumb it down, we don't want to make it PG-13. We want to keep it really edgy, and it's a huge bill," Verbinski insisted.
You'll recall that Verbinski was initially going to direct BioShock, but then opted to just produce it after the studio opted to shoot outside of L.A. Fresnadillo was then hired to direct, but he recently put BioShock on the back burner to go shoot the thriller Intruders.
When asked if he might take over the directing reins from Fresnadillo should the latter opt not to make BioShock after all, Verbinski dodged it. "We're really down the road with Juan Carlos and right now it's really a budget thing and how to keep the integrity and keep it a Hollywood movie because it could balloon. It's a lot. Our first budget was extraordinarily high and we're working on it," he said.

"28 Weeks Later" helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in talks to direct "Bioshock," the Universal Pictures adaptation of the Take-Two Interactive videogame.
Gore Verbinski has stepped out of the directing slot, but remains the film's producer through his U-based Blind Wink shingle. John Logan wrote the script.
Verbinski opted out of directing because the studio's budget plan for the film has been revamped to lense abroad in order to take advantage of tax credits and favorable exchange rates.
Verbinski couldn't commit to an overseas shoot because he is locked into directing the Paramount animated film "Rango," with the title character voiced by his "Pirates of the Caribbean" cohort Johnny Depp.
Fresnadillo directed the 2001 Spanish thriller "Intacto," and made his Hollywood breakthrough with "28 Weeks Later."
With "Bioshock," Fresnadillo is stepping into one of the highest-profile projects on the Universal roster. Verbinski came attached as director when Universal made a multimillion- dollar against gross percentage acquisition from Take-Two. Verbinski then stepped away from directing his fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film because he expected to be in production on "Bioshock" last spring in Los Angeles.
But Universal put on the brakes during the pre-production phase because the budget rose to $160 million and the studio needed it to cost less (Daily Variety, April 27). At the time, Universal sources vowed this would not turn into another "Halo"-- U and partner Fox dropped out of that vidgame adaptation, which was to be directed by "District 9" helmer Neill Blomkamp with Peter Jackson producing. But the negotiations with Fresnadillo indicate the studio is determined to make "Bioshock" offshore.
Once it was clear Verbinski wouldn't direct, he and the studio sparked to Fresnadillo, whose deal is contingent upon the thumbs-up from Take-Two, which maintains director approval. Fresnadillo's producing partner, Enrique Lopez Lavigne, is in talks to become a producer. [...]

It's been previously reported that the film is on hold due to concerns about its escalating budget. Verbinski tells the Times that it could probably get made, if it is shot in one of those foreign countries that offer a generous tax credit. And he's not sure whether he wants to go overseas for the year-plus it would require to make it. [...]

Erst im letzten Monat wurde der kommende Film BioShock auf Eis gelegt, da es zu finanziellen Problemen kam. Das für den Film geplante Budget von 160 Millionen US-Dollar konnte nicht aufgetrieben werden, weshalb Möglichkeiten untersucht wurden, um das Budget zu reduzieren.
Wentworth Miller soll eine tragende Rolle bekommen. Ob Universal und Verbinski mittlerweile zu einem gemeinsamen Nenner gekommen sind, ist noch nicht bekannt. Trotzdem geht die Planung weiter. Auf seinem offiziellen Twitter-Account deutete Schauspieler Wentworth Miller an, eine der wichtigsten Rollen in dem Film zu spielen. Wentworth Miller ist bekannt aus der Serie Prison Break. Einen weiteren Hinweis lieferte er mit der Nachricht, dass es für ihn nach dem Finale von Prison Break mit BioShock weitergeht.
Offiziell aber hüllen sich Universal und Verbinski noch in Schweigen. Wer nichts mit Filmen anfangen kann und sich eher gemütlich auf die Couch legt, um ein dickes Buch zu lesen, darf trotzdem die Story von BioShock genießen. Diese soll nämlich in Form eines Romanes mit 400 Seiten in gebundener Fassung und als Taschenbuch erscheinen. Weitere Informationen sind noch nicht bekannt.

Universal Pictures has put the brakes on "Bioshock," the Gore Verbinski-directed live action adaptation of the bestselling Take-Two Interactive vidgame. The picture was in pre-production, but the studio has halted that effort--and let some production staff go--as Universal and Verbinski figure out a way to make the film at a more reasonable budget.
Sources said that the John Logan-scripted picture was gearing up to shoot in Los Angeles, but that changed when the budget rose to the vicinity of $160 million. U and Verbinski are looking at alternatives like shooting in London as a way to pare costs. The plotline takes place in the underwater city Rapture, where a pilot crash-lands near a secret entrance and becomes involved in a power struggle.
"We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit," Verbinski said. "We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."
Verbinski and sources at the studio say they are determined to make the pic. Indeed, Verbinski (who has also been directing the Paramount animated film "Rango" with Johnny Depp) bowed out of directing a fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" so that he could direct "Bioshock" and produce under his Blind Wink banner.
Studio sources said that the budget simply became untenable, but U sources said this is no different than when the studio delayed the start of the untitled Robin Hood pic that Ridley Scott is now directing with Russell Crowe starring. U is making that picture for $130 million, a much lower budget that in its first incarnation. For a number of reasons that included the need for extra script work, that picture temporarily halted, a move which enabled Crowe to star in "State of Play" when Brad Pitt fell out.
All parties vow that "Bioshock" will not become another "Halo," the live action adaptation of the Microsoft game that was going to be turned into a film by U and Fox until both studios got cold feet and cancelled the deal over budget fears.

Schon häufiger wurde gemeldet, dass Take 2 noch eine Playstation 3 - Version von BioShock planen könnte. Und nun hat es den Anschein, als wäre es so gut wie sicher, dass noch in diesem Jahr eine Umsetzung des vielfach ausgezeichneten Action-Shooter erscheinen wird.
Die Zeitschrift Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) berichtet in der aktuellen Ausgabe, dass die PS3-Version von BioShock im September in den Handel kommen soll. Diese wird nicht nur das eigentliche Spiel enthalten, sondern auch alle bisher veröffentlichten Download-Inhalte. Zudem soll die Konvertierung gegenüber der PC- und Xbox 360- Vorlage auch grafisch etwas verbessert werden.
Seitens Take 2 wurde die PS3-Fassung noch nicht bestätigt, nach dem Erfolg des Spiels wäre diese Entscheidung alles andere als verwunderlich.

Universal and Gore Verbinski are going into "Bioshock."
Studio has signed a deal to turn last year's hit videogame, which won numerous awards and sold more than 2 million units worldwide, into a film.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmer is attached to direct and produce. "Aviator" scribe John Logan is in talks to pen the screenplay.
"Bioshock" publisher Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the pic. It's believed to be the biggest videogame-to-movie deal since 2005, when U and Fox signed onto the since aborted "Halo" pic, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%.
Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick said the "state of the art" deal is structured so that "Bioshock" won't end up in turnaround like "Halo," which is back with Microsoft.
"The reason I structured it the way I did is to make sure it gets made," he emphasized.
"Bioshock" takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he'd thought.
"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," said Verbinski. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."
Take-Two has been approached by a number of producers and studios since the game came out in August but waited until it had swept most of the end-of-year industry awards and racked up impressive holiday sales before working with CAA to package the project. Universal got a first look and made a preemptive bid.
Zelnick, who was president of Fox in the early '90s, led the dealmaking for his company, rather than set the project up with a producer.
"One of the things we decided early on is that we didn't want to go through a producer," he commented. "It's terribly important to us to have a meaningful influence on how this project is produced. We didn't want any insulation between us."
Verbinski noted that Rapture's art deco design and visually arresting characters, such as the mechanical Big Daddys who protect genetically mutated girls called Little Sisters, particularly inspired him to see the game as a film.
Though no release date is even being targeted, Verbinski said he plans to start pre-production as soon as Logan's script is finished and approved by all involved.
Helmer has been regularly consulting with Ken Levine, the game's creative director, though it's not yet clear if the game developer will have a formal role in the film.
For Universal, project marks a return to the videogame space after the disastrous "Halo" experience. After more than a year of development, during which Peter Jackson was signed to exec produce and Neil Blomkamp to direct the "Halo" feature, U and Fox shut down the project over cost concerns.
"This deal gives Universal the opportunity to have the immersive, addictive universe of 'Bioshock' interpreted by a filmmaker with unrivaled abilities to convey story, action and large-scale, fantastical visuals," said U co-chairman David Linde.
Take-Two is developing a "Bioshock" sequel that will be released in 2009, almost certainly before the film comes out.
Though numerous videogames have been turned into movies and others are in the works, very few have been commercial or critical successes. Take-Two itself has turned down numerous attempts by Hollywood to option its Rockstar label's hit franchise "Grand Theft Auto." "Bioshock" marks the first movie deal ever for the publisher.

Digging through all the praise heaped upon BioShock, you're sure to scrape your nails across several repeated phrases such as "engaging," "gripping" and "atmospheric." Some have even said it's "pretty good." The most common one, however, is sure to be "cinematic," a term that places BioShock and Hollywood in rather close proximity. A reliable source within a major film production company has told Joystiq that the two have been getting along famously, with a movie adaptation of 2K's successful franchise already being discussed by the Big Daddies internally.
The studio hopes to bring the fallen aquatic utopia of Rapture to celluloid life through extensive use of green screen technology, an approach not dissimilar to Legendary Pictures' interpretation of 300. If the computer generated approach is deemed feasible and fitting, the focus can then shift to capturing BioShock's secondary (and uninhabited) characters. While it's not guaranteed to move beyond these early stages, this project has our full support [...]

Die Gerüchteküche rund um die Handlung des Bioshock-Nachfolgers beginnt zu brodeln. So will die tschechische Spielewebsite Hrej.cz von einem Informanten bei 2K Games erfahren haben, dass die Vorproduktion gerade gestartet habe und derzeit Mitte 2009 als Termin anvisiert sei. Derzeit entwickele 2K Games gerade ein Konzept für die Handlung. Klar sei aber jetzt schon, dass Bioshock 2 die Geschehnisse vor dem ersten Teil erzählen werde. Die Chancen stehen also gut, dass Bioshock-Fans mehr über die Stadt Rapture und deren Erbauer Andrew Ryan erfahren. [...]
