Relativity Media’s Co-President, Tucker Tooley, Edward R. Pressman, producer behind the cult-classic The Crow franchise, and The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films, announced today they have closed a deal with F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before The Fall) to direct a reinvention of The Crow, the 1994 smash hit film based on the comic book series and comic strip by James O’Barr. Writer Jesse Wigutow has signed on to pen the script. [...]
Wigutow most recently did a re-write for Robert Ludlum’s thriller The Osterman Weekend for Summit, and adapted the book "Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel" for Brian Oliver’s Cross Creek Films. He is also developing Age Inappropriate at Universal and Irreparable Harm at HBO. Previously, he has worked on films including: Tron: Legacy, 8 Mile, Eragon, and The Ruins.
The Crow adaptation will be a gritty reboot of the iconic character Eric Draven, who returns from the grave as The Crow on a mission to avenge his wife’s murder, so that his soul can finally rest. The original film is known for its breakthrough visual style as well as its unique production design and cinematography. The project is currently in development; start of production, targeted release dates and casting to be announced.
The film is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most and Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh. Relativity’s Tooley (Immortals), The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Farah Films’ Dan Farah (Armored) will serve as executive producers.

Wie CS! meldet, wurde der Streit um die Filmrechte beigelegt...
Relativity Media alerted us today that the company and The Weinstein Company have settled the lawsuit over The Crow and will together continue to develop a new feature:
"The lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company concerning THE CROW has been amicably settled out of court, and the parties will continue to work on the film together as planned. In addition, Relativity Media has dismissed all of its claims against The Weinstein Company for any wrongdoing regarding the release and distribution of NINE, and The Weinstein Company has dismissed all of its claims against Relativity Media."
[...] Bradley Cooper was attached to the new film for a while, but dropped out last August.

[15.10.2011]
Wie Twitch meldet, ist wieder mal der Reboot-Regisseur abgesprungen... [...] Director Stephen Norrington was initially slated to direct the reboot from a script by Nick Cave. Then an actor - who has never been named - expressed an interest in the part and a dislike for Cave's script which led to Cave being bounced. And Norrington followed. The Norrington / Cave combination was eventually replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Alex Tse as the director and writer, respectively, with Bradley Cooper eventually signing on to play Eric Draven. But then Cooper left, too, apparently due to scheduling conflicts, conflicts ironically enough due to his role in Alex Proyas' Paradise Lost.
And now Twitch has learned that Fresnadillo, the director of Intruders and 28 Weeks Later, is gone, too. Though nothing is definite on this front yet we're hearing rumblings that Fresnadillo may take over the Highlander reboot for Summit but Highlander or no Highlander he's not doing The Crow any more and the hunt is on for a new director with Before The Fall's F Javier Gutierrez being floated as a possibility.

Heat Vision meldet... "As the crow flies" may denote the shortest route from one place to another, but the movie version of The Crow is proving to be less than a straight shot.
Relativity is remaking the supernatural action movie based on the 1990s comic and has set Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct.
Bradley Cooper was to have played the title character but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he has now exited due to scheduling conflicts. Cooper has David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook shooting this fall and then dives straight into Legendary’s Paradise Lost, which shoots first quarter next year... the exact time Relativity plans on making the high-priority Crow.
But akin to the project’s rock musician who is killed and resurrected, two new names have surfaced as possible replacements: Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg.
Walhberg has a previous association with the Crow; he was offered the part last fall but a deal never materialized. But there is a question as to whether he wants to revisit the role, and last week he signed on to Universal's 2 Guns action pic.
Tatum is best known for his work in G.I. Joe and the weepie Dear John.
It’s too early to tell what will happen with either Tatum or Walhberg, or whether other actors join the fray, although Relativity is keen on not wasting time.
The studio also is embroiled in litigation with The Weinstein Co. over distribution rights to the film. Harvey and Co. believe they have a deal to release the film but Relativity argues that the Weinsteins forfeited their right by, among other things, botching the release of the expensive Relativity-backed flop Nine. That case is currently in arbitration. [...]

Relativity Media's President of Worldwide Production, Tucker Tooley, and Edward R. Pressman, producer behind the cult-classic "The Crow" franchise, announced today they have attached Alex Tse (Watchmen) to write their reinvention of The Crow, the 1994 critically film based on the comic book series and comic strip by James O'Barr.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), The Crow adaptation will be a gritty reboot of the gothic iconic character Eric Draven, who returns from the grave as The Crow on a mission to avenge his wife's murder, so that his soul can finally rest. Bradley Cooper (Limitless) is attached to star as Draven. "The original film is known for its breakthrough visual style as well as its unique production design and cinematography. Fresnadillo and Tse are perfectly suited to bring these beloved characters back to life, and to create a world worthy of this modern classic," said Relativity.
Relativity and Edward R. Pressman Film Corporation will be teaming with Spain-based Apaches Entertainment on the production. The Crow is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most, Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh, and Apaches' Enrique López Lavigne and Belén Atienza. Relativity's Tooley (The Fighter) and Apaches' Jesus de la Vega will serve as executive producers. José Ibáñez and Pressman Film Corporation's Jon Katz will serve as co-producers. [...]

Heat Vision meldet... Bradley Cooper is in early negotiations to star in Relativity’s remake of The Crow, being directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
In the adaptation of the gritty black-and-white indie comic by artist James O'Barr, Cooper will play a rock musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancée from thugs. He is resurrected by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. The role was originally played by Brandon Lee, who was killed by a freak accident during production in 1993.
Relativity is flying fast with Crow, with Fresnadillo only officially boarding the project a week ago. The Spanish director of 28 Weeks Later is said to have met with Cooper in Spain recently, where the two hit it off and shared a vision for the character and the film. Relativity would not confirm the talks but sources say Cooper, currently in theaters in Relativity’s hit thriller Limitless, is keen to board the project.
The new film is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most, Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Apaches Entertainment's Enrique Lopez Lavigne and Belen Atienza.
Production is targeted to start in the fall. Relativity’s Tucker Tooley (The Fighter) will serve as executive producer. José Ibáñez, Pressman Film Corporation’s Jon Katz and Apaches’ Jesús de la Vega will serve as co-producers.
Cooper, repped by CAA, next appears in The Hangover Part II, which opens May 26.

CS! meldet...
Relativity has just announced that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) has signed on to direct the reboot of James O'Barr's The Crow with a production start eyed for this fall.
According to the press release, Fresnadillo will collaborate with a writer on the screenplay, that name expected to be announced shortly. What's more, the reboot is confirmed to focus on the character of Eric Draven (infamously played in the 1994 film by Brandon Lee, who was killed on-set).
"Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is an incredibly talented and imaginative filmmaker," says Executive Producer Tucker Tooley, "We are thrilled to have him at the helm and are excited to work with both Pressman and Apaches on what we all believe will be a compelling and innovative reimagining of 'The Crow.'"
"The original Crow was groundbreaking cinema," adds producer Edward R. Pressman, "Its gothic visual and musical ideas influenced a generation and cinema itself. With Juan Carlos, we have every confidence that his new Crow will have a similar impact on the contemporary audience."
Along with Pressman, the film will be produced by Jeff Most, Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh, and Apaches' Enrique López Lavigne and Belén Atienza. José Ibáñez, Pressman Film Corporation's Jon Katz, and Apaches' Jesús de la Vega will serve as co-producers.
Originally a 1989 comic book miniseries by O'Barr, "The Crow" spawned a number of graphic sequels, four feature films and a television series. The reboot, planned since last year, was, at one point, going to be directed by Stephen Norrington. He departed the project last October.
[23.10.2010]
Wie Mania.com meldet, ist Regisseur Stephen Norrington raus aus der Remake-Nummer... [...] director Stephen Norrington is no longer attached to the planned Crow feature film, which was to revitalize the moribund franchise.
Norrington's attachment to the film was announced in December 2008. The director has given regular updates to C2F readers, dispelling the persistent rumor that the movie was to be a remake of Alex Proyas' breakout 1994 film. We last heard from him in July, when he gave us the details on Nick Cave's polish of his script.
When new rumors emerged that Mark Wahlberg has been offered the lead role in the film, we checked in with Norrington for comment.
"I don't know about that story but I can tell you I'm no longer involved with The Crow," Norrington replied.
He went on to reveal that an unnamed star had gotten involved with the movie. The star supposedly loved Norrington's vision and wanted to work with him, but then rejected the Norrington/Cave script and asked for a completely new take from a completely new writer.
"As I had gotten involved explicitly as a writer-director my exit was inevitable. I was bummed. I had developed a genuinely authentic take that respected the source material while moving beyond it, and Nick Cave came in and added more depth," Norrington tells us. "I think the fans would have been pleasantly surprised."
Norrington declined to name the "star" and his comments suggested to us that it may not have been Wahlberg.
"I will say I think Wahlberg could be cool if they take a gritty blue-collar approach," Norrington commented on the rumor. "He's a truthful actor. I think he could really ground the supernatural stuff."
So, after 18 months or so of development under Norrington, it looks like Relativity Media's Crow relaunch has gone back to square one. [...]

[...] Mark Wahlberg was offered the lead role in Relativity Media's The Crow, a remake of the 1994 film that starred Brandon Lee as a man (Eric Draven) brutally murdered that comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. Iconic musician and acclaimed screenwriter Nick Cave has been working on a rewrite with Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ) attached to direct. The new tale is said to take place in Detroit. [...]

Bei MTV gibt es den letzten Stand in Sachen "The Crow"-Reboot... [...] According to Pressman, Norrington's screenplay is finished and, apparently, "terrific." After collaborating on some illustrations with "Avatar" production designer Rob Stromberg - illustrations that are "quite different from Alex Proyas' approach with the original 'Crow,'" Pressman said - Norrington's vision is inching much closer to reality, with casting announcements on the way and filming beginning this year.
"[We've got an offer out] to a major actor and things are moving ahead very aggressively, with the aim of doing the film this year," Pressman told MTV News.
Pressman revealed that the film's setting will diverge from the original vision of "The Crow," although it will still draw from the gritty city elements of the Brandon Lee-starring film.
"The setting is the southwest - the Mexico/Arizona area - and an urban [setting], Detroit or Pittsburgh or something like that," he described. "There are two locations that the film is set. Its initial platform is in the southwest and then it moves to the big city in the north, middle or eastern America, and then back."
That sandwich of settings is part of what distinguishes this "Crow" from previous visions, as is Norrington's treatment of the "Crow" mythology. "The Crow itself is a creature in this movie - it's not just a bird," said the producer. "It's got a personality and a character. Not like Godzilla exactly, but it's very different [and has] a more active role in the story."
If nothing else, Norrington's vision of "The Crow" is different from what fans are used to.
"Obviously it's a different time and a different idea, but I think Stephen is a very talented fellow and I'm very excited to work with him," said Pressman. "I think it's a very different conception [than the original film]. After the first 'Crow,' there were so many other films that were inspired by it, by its look. Steve is an artist himself, and he's created a very different visual idea."
[20.02.2010]
STYD berichtet über die Neuverfilmung... It's been a few months since we've heard any updates on the proposed reboot for The Crow, which Blade director Stephen Norrington was attached to helm. While producer Ryan Kavanaugh gave a quick update about the project back in November, last month Norrington was announced as the director on The Lost Patrol, a World War II supernatural action thriller for Legendary Pictures.
According to a brief chat with Mania, Norrington is still on board. "The producer and visual effects people are crunching numbers. We've opened discussions with major cast but nothing is final yet," says Norrington.
Considering The Crow script is already completed and it is a hot property, he tells the web publication that it'll probably shoot before The Lost Patrol, possibly by this summer. "Cast and budget and schedules will no doubt continue to adjust all equations." [...]
[15.12.2008]
Variety.com berichtet über die Neuverfilmung... [...] Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of "The Crow," based on the comic created by James O’Barr.
Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.
Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.
For Norrington, "The Crow" deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero "Blade," Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since.
Norrington said he felt demoralized by that experience, and the accomplished sculptor spent the next five years writing and working on his art. He made a deal to direct "Clash of the Titans" for Warner Bros., but left the project, he said, because he was "unable to excite Warner Bros. with my take, or influence the screenplay to any comfortable extent." That pic goes into production early next year with Louis Leterrier at the helm.
Norrington resolved to focus on independent projects, and sparked to an approach on "The Crow" from Relativity production chief Tucker Tooley and Pressman.
Norrington had a relationship with Pressman when they came close to making "Mutant Chronicles" several years ago. Both embraced Norrington’s vision of the antihero, which Norrington said will be different than the film Proyas made.
"Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington told Daily Variety. [...]

IESB sprach mit Jason Statham... IESB: [...] Are there any comic book characters that you’d like to play in a film?
Statham: Yeah, absolutely. That’d be another area of my wishlist. I’d love to play one, yeah.
IESB: Anyone in particular?
Statham: Let me think... It’s funny, I took a meeting for Sub-Mariner. I don’t know if I’d look right running around in a tight speedo with wings on my ankles but there’s so many cool fucking characters. The Hulk, I’ve always been a big fan of but Ed Norton’s doing that. And rightly so. He’s fucking amazing. And he’s working with Louis Leterrier, believer it or not who did The Transporter. I’m trying to think of what would be a good comic book character for me to play. You know, there’s talk of them redoing The Crow. That was a good movie with Brandon Lee, although that was years ago. So if that one comes my way, bang! You know, there’s so many comic book movies out there and most of the time there’s only a handful of people who can do them any justice. Hopefully, they’ll come my way for one of them. [...]

Pressman and Jeff Most. Lance Mungia ("Six-String Samurai") is directing the project, which goes into production in June. Emmanuelle Chriqui, Danny Trejo, Marcus Chong and Tito Ortiz round out the cast. Set in the Southwest, "Prayer" tells the story of ex-con Jimmy Cuervo (Furlong) and his girlfriend, Lily (Chriqui), who are murdered by Luc Crash (Boreanaz) and his satanic gang Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as part of a ritual for Crash to become an immortal demon. The rest of the gang is played by Chong, Ortiz and Reid, with Reid playing Crash's evil love interest. Hopper plays El Nino who marries Crash and Lola.

Though he made a name for himself in films like "Terminator 2" and the weighty drama "American History X," Furlong said the appeal of doing "Wicked Prayer" is pretty simple. "I come in. I kill the bad guys. I'm the Crow. ... It's going to be dope!"
