Wie Deadline meldet, wurde eine Drehbuchautorin für das Remake gefunden...
Lionsgate has set Maria Maggenti to script the Dirty Dancing remake that has Kenny Ortega attached to direct. Ortega was the choreographer of the 1987 Emile Ardolino-helmed film about a pampered young girl who summers with her upscale family at an establishment in the Catskills and falls in love with the resident dance instructor. Because Lionsgate has fast-tracked the film and set a director, this was a job a lot of writers wanted. Maggenti got it after scripting Monte Carlo for Fox and New Regency. Since then, she scripted an adaptation of Before I Fall and is finishing up My Name Is Memory, also for Fox 2000 and New Regency. The writer’s repped by APA and Madhouse Entertainment.
Lionsgate is hoping to recapture some of the financial magic of the original, a sleeper hit that for its time was one of the most profitable independent films ever seen, costing $6 million and grossing $213.95 million worldwide. It was made by Vestron, which could not get its act together and mobilize a sequel before crapping out. Lionsgate released Artisan’s 2004 sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, but didn’t make that film and has started from scratch and gone back to the original.
CS! berichtet über das Remake...
Lionsgate is set to produce Dirty Dancing, based on the classic 1987 film of the same name, it was announced today by Joe Drake, co-COO of Lionsgate and President of the Motion Picture Group. The original film's choreographer Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical," Michael Jackson's This Is It), will direct. Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Kenny Ortega are producing. The studio is in talks with Eleanor Bergstein, the writer and co-producer of the original film, regarding her involvement in the new film in a producing capacity. Alli Shearmur, President of Motion Picture Development and Production, is overseeing the project on behalf of Lionsgate.
The studio released the following statement: "The new film is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby's forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions."
"Amazingly it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released, but the fans remain legion, and engaged more than ever with a brand that is special and vital to them. We believe that the timing couldn't be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm," said Drake.
Said Ortega of the project, "The opportunity to direct 'Dirty Dancing' is like returning home for me. Growing up in the '60s on the dance floor helped define me as a person and as an artist. I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring 'Dirty Dancing' to the screen for a new generation. Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him. I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can't wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats."
He continues, "I want to thank writer/producer Eleanor Bergstein for originally choosing me to choreograph 'Dirty Dancing' and for her continuous support. I'm thrilled to once again be working with my friend and producing partner Debra Martin Chase. My deep appreciation to Alli Shearmur, Joe Drake, and everyone at Lionsgate for their enthusiasm to make the film and for their confidence in me to helm the project."
"This remake of 'Dirty Dancing' presents an exciting opportunity to both celebrate what has made this movie so beloved and refresh and enhance it so that new audiences can claim it as their own," said producer Chase. "I am thrilled to be working with Kenny Ortega again and with the dynamic creative team at Lionsgate."

[...] The studio has announced they're squeezing what they can out of some of their most profitable franchises, announcing TV spin-off's of both "The Punisher" and "Dirty Dancing".
Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lions Gate Films, tells Variety that NBC will play host to the two tube offerings, both, I'm assuming, featuring all-new casts.
"Dirty Dancing" has actually been given the TV series treatment before. Running from 1988-1989, the series starred Patrick Cassidy as Johnny Castle and Melora Hardin as Frances "Baby" Kellerman.

Diego Luna, the hot 23-year-old Mexican actor (Y Tu Mamá También, Frida), only recently saw Dirty Dancing; he was too young during its initial run. "It was far from being the perfect movie for an 8-year-old kid. I was looking for cars and superheroes. This movie is more complex; it takes more risks, and setting it in Cuba adds another color." Puerto Rico stands in for Cuba in the film.
Luna's Javier, who partners in a national contest with Katey, is no professional mover-and-shaker like Patrick Swayze, who puts in a cameo. Instead, "he's a waiter with no father who must take care of his family. At night, he feels free when he dances."
It took more than two months of rehearsal for the untrained stars to learn their routines, especially since no doubles are used. Says Luna: "At a party, I'm a good dancer. But I can't take a margarita to work at 8 in the morning." How dirty is the dancing? "Pretty dirty for 1958," he says, laughing. "But dancing can't be dirty. It's beautiful."
