[...]
"Dylan Dog is a character that brilliantly mixes charisma, affability, and hard-driven principles," said Munroe. "I couldn't be happier with Brandon's portrayal -- he meshed all of those aspects into a charming action hero, funny as he was ass-kicking. I can't wait to share his work with the world." [...]

Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Platinum Studios Inc. have commenced production on Dead of Night. This film is based on the best-selling Italian comic book series, "Dylan Dog," created by Tiziano Sclavi and published by Italy's Sergio Bonelli Editore. The comic book series has sold more than 56 million units worldwide and has been translated into 17 languages since its debut in 1986. Principal photography is taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) stars as 'Dylan' - a reluctant private investigator who is drawn into the world of vampires, werewolves and the undead -- and the film is being directed by Kevin Munroe, whose 2007 re-imagining of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles resurrected the billion dollar franchise.
Munroe brings a fresh take to the genre by focusing less on the transformation from human to non-human and more on the seamless interaction between the living and the undead. Writers Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly (Sahara, Conan the Barbarian) have taken the world of Dylan Dog out of a European setting and given it a New Orleans flavor with its rich bayou and marshland backdrop.
Platinum Studios and the Hyde Park Group are joined in the production with producer Gilbert Adler who is no stranger to comic book adaptations, having produced Superman Returns and Constantine for Warner Bros. The film reteams Adler with star Brandon Routh, who played Clark Kent. Adler has worked for many years in the thriller/horror genre as a writer, producer and director for numerous "Tales from the Crypt" television episodes and feature films. He has also produced House on Haunted Hill, Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship and most recently, Valkyrie, his second stint with director Bryan Singer.
The producers have also hired Harvey Lowry and Academy Award-winning DRAC Studios to handle make-up effects. DRAC Studios has been nominated eleven times for Best Achievement in Makeup by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, most recently won for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and won twice before for Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mrs. Doubtfire.
Platinum Studios chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Amritraj are producing with Adler. Executive Producers are Omnilab Media's Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street and David Whealy, Cinemarket's Peter Graves, The Greenberg Group's Randy Greenberg, who brought all of the parties together, Hyde Park's Patrick Aiello, Kevin Munroe, SAF Comics' Ervin Rustemagic, Lars Sylvest and Film Production Capital LLC's Will French and Stephen Roberts. Platinum Studios' Brian Altounian and Rich Marincic are co-producing along with Hyde Park's Manu Gargi.

Writer-director Kevin Munroe dropped a line to provide us a status report on Dead of Night, a proper adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi's comic book which served as an inspiration for Cemetery Man. Since our last chat in November, Munroe says there have been some developments.
"We're hopefully going to New Orleans next week to begin location scouting," Munroe tells us. "Filming will hopefully begin at the end of March. The crew is coming together right now. The script is pretty much done and we started going out to the cast last week. It was fun to start sending it out to the people we think would be right for the film. Everyone is responding to it really well. It's nice to know you're not the only one in the room who thinks it's a great project."
Leading man Brandon Routh will star as Dylan Dog, but the Superman Returns actor recently committed to Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Will that create any conflicts? Munroe is confident it won't affect his shooting schedule. "I think everyone is aware of each other. I know Eric Gitter who is the producer on that project and it's not even an overlap. Dead of Night will wrap then [Brandon] will go on to Scott Pilgrim so it's totally fine." [...]

The next two months will be productive ones for the Dylan Dog feature film Dead of Night. Director Kevin Munroe (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles '07) informs that final financing is closing in and that by the beginning of December prep gets underway for, fingers crossed, a January principal photography start in New Orleans this January.
Munroe came aboard the adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi's popular Italian comic book character in April with Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) already attached to star as suave supernatural investigator. Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly wrote the screenplay.
On the casting tip, The Hollywood Reporter says Sammo Hung is in talks to star. Munroe adds, "We're coming up with a cast list and talking to a few actors. We've sent the script off to get feedback and gauge interest. The good thing is that Josh and Tom wrote such a good script, it just really attracts people, so I think within a month we're going to start releasing names of who's coming aboard."
The director is relishing this time working with a creature makeup effects artist (who he's keeping mum on right now) to visualize the myriad menaces Dylan Dog will face in his first adventure on the big screen. And Munroe is most certainly going to make this debut count. "We've got werewolves, zombies and vampires - and a few sub-categories of those," he reveals. "His world is everything and the kitchen sink so with this one we don't have anything quite as broad as, say, Hellboy II where you go to the [Troll Market] with different creatures, but here it's a little bit more classic for the first movie and in the second [film] you go a bit deeper."
Wait, a "second movie"? Is Dead of Night an origin story that sees the rise of Dylan Dog? "If this was the only Dylan Dog movie to ever hit the market, I'd be bummed but I'd be satisfied that it has a definitive beginning middle and end," he clarifies. "It's an origin story to the audience in the sense that it's the first time you get to see him. What I was attracted to was that it's an origin story without every showing him being recruited into this whole world. When we meet Dylan at the beginning of this movie, he's at the lowest point of his life. He's already left that life he had in the comic books. And the whole movie is about him getting back up on the horse. So, as an audience member you're introduced to all of these things. You get to see how much of a bad-ass he is, not because he's stepping through to prove it but because he's done it before in another life. It's a next step for him."
Munroe is cognizant of the fact that the genre is riddled with various films about investigators prowling the world for things that go bump in the night, but he's of the belief that it's not about the party, but what you bring to it that counts. "It's really cool because the curse and the blessing of Dylan Dog is that it's all very familiar territory. I still maintain it's presented in such a fresh way. In the same way you think you've seen every alien movie, and then Men in Black comes along and you realize you never looked at it from that film's point of view. Dylan Dog does that well."
