Newcomer Sam Worthington is rising up in the ranks! We hear buzz that he may be starring in a Flash Gordon remake. He currently stars in James Cameron’s Avatar, and has been named as one of the hot breakout stars of the year.
Sources say Sam is up against the sexy Ryan Reynolds for the leading role in the sci-fi flick. "If he gets the role it would be quite a big deal as Flash is an all-American hero," dished one Hollywood insider. "Right now it’s between Sam, Ryan Reynolds and one or two others for the lead role should the project actually get off the ground."
The role calls for Flash as a handsome polo player and Yale graduate, who travels to the planet Mongo, where it’s discovered that the meteors are weapons devised by Ming the Merciless, evil ruler of Mongo.
What’s interesting is that the role is an American hero. Sam Worthington is Australian, but we’re sure he’d be happy to perfect his best American accent for a role like this! [...]

THR.com meldet... "Flash Gordon" is moving ahead at breakneck speed.
Sony has signed writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script for the new take on the outer space tale, just a few months after winning rights to the title from Hearst.
"Flash Gordon" centers on the titular young polo player who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless.
Sony's "Flash," a live-action film, follows in a 75-year tradition across many media for what began life as Alex Raymond's comic strip; the property was a movie serial in the 1930s, a Sam Jones-toplined feature in 1980 and a recent Sci Fi Channel series.
The ICM-repped Sazama and Sharpless are penning the vampire tale "Dracula Year Zero" for Universal and Zack Snyder's "Cobalt 60."
The new "Flash" originally had been set up at Universal, but rights reverted to Hearst's King Features Syndicate after the project sat in development for several years.
Breck Eisner is attached to direct and Neal Moritz to produce, as they were when the project was set up at Universal.
THR.com meldet... Columbia might be rocketing a redo-update of "Flash Gordon," entering talks to acquire the film rights for a big-screen adaptation that has Breck Eisner attached to direct and Neal Moritz set to produce. Eisner also will exec produce.
"Flash" originally was a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, "Buck Rogers." "Flash" was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and was made into a lavish 1980 film starring Sam Jones but remembered more for its Queen score. More recently, it was a Sci Fi Channel miniseries that was seen as a critical and ratings failure.
Storywise, Flash was an athlete who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and the mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless and meet such strange inhabitants as the Hawkmen and the Sharkmen.
No writers are on board to adapt.
Moritz is becoming something of a favorite son at Columbia, with plenty of plum projects in his stable. The producer is developing for the studio a live-action adaptation of the "Goosebumps" book series, a remake of "21 Jump Street," and an adaptation of "The Green Hornet."
Eisner, repped by CAA, is developing a remake of "Creature From the Black Lagoon" as a directing vehicle, and developing a remake of the 1973 George A. Romero horror movie "Crazies." He also directed the premiere episode of NBC's horror anthology "Fear Itself."

MoviesOnline.ca meldet... Shawn Levy is filming the FLASH Gordon film and an insider emailed us to let us know that the filming will begin April 24th in Vancouver. Our source is un-confirmed so take it with a grain of salt but he said the right things, enough for us to believe him. Shawn Levy is best known for directing the new comedic hit Night At the Museum which has been dominating the box office the last few weeks. He also directed Cheaper by the Dozen and Pink Panther.
Ryan Reynolds was the favorite to play FLASH and frankly I think that was a great choice. Since he was not signed to the project, I wonder who Shawn Levy's first choice would be.
CinemaBlend meldet... TV Blend recently learned that Chris Showerman is up for the title role of the upcoming SCI FI series, ‘Flash Gordon.’ Showerman, who starred in the film, George of the Jungle 2 [...]
‘Flash Gordon’ was greenlit for 22 episodes. The show is based on the original comic book and is set to air on the Sci Fi Channel in July. The classic characters, including Ming, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov will all be in the series.
The Sci Fi channel reported in mid-January that production for the show was supposed to begin sometime "early this year." Once they officially cast their title character, they are likely to begin filming in Canada sometime soon after that. [...]
Moviehole meldet... [...] Despite an earlier proposal to bring pulp comic-book hero Flash Gordon back to movie screens - with Stephen Sommers ("The Mummy") leading the charge, and Kutcher the favourite to play the fighting footballer - seems the character is instead headed for the small screen.
According to Geek Monthly, Sci Fi is secretly developing a new "Flash Gordon" series. It’ll be much more serious than the previous film version - and no, Sam Jones won’t be back. It’s all tied in with the success of the classic "Battlestar Galactica". I guess Sci Fi have tapped onto the fact that they can take these classic old shows/serials and give them a nice oil and grease, primed for a contemporary audience. [...]
Moviehole meldet... [...] 'Jason' tells us that Theatre actor James K.Cole has had discussions with "Flash Gordon" head honcho Stephen Sommers about playing the titular footy-playing hero. Assmuningly, the Off-Broadway regular will be merely one of many wanting to get in on the big screen retool. [...]
Moviehole meldet... One-time "Superman" contender Ashton Kutcher is apparently in talks with Director Stephen Sommers to star as "Flash Gordon, says the World Entertainment News Network.
Sommers ["Van Helsing"] apparently sees Demi's bed-bud as the perfect 'Flash'. "He has the right look, the right build and he isn't known for any one film role so he would be an empty canvas for Stephen to work with." [...]
He'll no doubt be asked to sign for a sequel or two - which will no doubt happen if the film is a hit - and it's possible that he'll be tied to the role for years to come. [...]
Bei CS! gibt es folgende "Variety"-Meldung... The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Van Helsing writer/director Stephen Sommers and his producing partner Bob Ducsay have landed the rights to Flash Gordon, and will adapt a feature film based on the iconic comic book superhero for Universal, reports Variety. Sommers is producing the project and may write the film. He has yet to direct a project he hasn't scripted.
Flash Gordon dates back to 1934, when it was created by famed comic strip artist Alex Raymond, and for decades after appeared in movie serials, animated fare, TV shows and a 1980 feature helmed by Mike Hodges (Croupier).
The trade adds that, as part of the deal, the legendary intergalactic adventurer, his female companion Dale Arden and scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov will again appear in comic books. This time, the series will be distributed by Top Cow, whose film head Spike Selden will executive produce with former Davis Entertainment executive Adam Coplan. Sommers is expected to serve as a creative consultant on the new series of comic books.
Cinescape meldet... [...] our own scooper have told us that, for now, Sommers is attached as just a producer for FLASH GORDON. Inside word is that the gentleman is waiting to see how his new movie, VAN HELSING, fares at the box office come May. If VAN HELSING proves to be a monster-sized hit, Sommers may have to pass on writing and directing FLASH in favor of VAN HELSING 2.
One other piece of information that we were able to gleam today and that hasn't been previously revealed anywhere else involves one of the potential candidates waiting in the wings to write the FLASH GORDON script should Sommers decide to pass on the job. Our source indicated that Ronald Sussett (co-writer of ALIEN, screenwriter/producer on TOTAL RECALL and an executive producer for MINORITY REPORT) has been approached to pen the script should the opportunity arise and a deal can be reached.
IGN FilmForce meldet... IGN FilmForce has received confirmation from the Sommers Company, the production shingle of writer-director Stephen Sommers, that The Mummy and Van Helsing filmmaker is involved with Universal's big-screen revival of Flash Gordon. Sommers has been a rumored contender to helm the project for several months now.
We were advised that, as of now, Sommers will most certainly produce Flash Gordon but has not yet decided whether he will write and direct it, too. We were also told that Sommers won't announce his decision on Flash Gordon until after Van Helsing opens in May.
Oddly enough, Sommers' reps at the William Morris Agency outright denied his involvement with the project.
IGN FilmForce meldet... [...] The rumor mill recently suggested that The Mummy's Stephen Sommers is in the running to direct Flash Gordon's big-screen return. Created in 1934 by comic strip artist Alex Raymond, Flash Gordon is one of the most influential characters in science fiction. He's made the leap to the silver screen before in a number of memorable 1930s serials starring the iconic Buster Crabbe, as well as in a campy 1980 cult classic starring Sam Jones and Max von Sydow (and with a score by Queen). Flash has also appeared on radio and in a 1954 TV series and a number of cartoons.
Producer Ben Myron has reportedly been developing a new Flash Gordon movie for five years now. Jesse Alexander (TV's Alias) penned a rather enjoyable draft back in 1997 when the project was set-up elsewhere. [...]
C2F meldet... [...] Ben Myron [...] is producing Flash Gordon which is now at Mandalay Entertainment. Myron told C2F that they were starting over with this movie and looking for a new script and a new director.
C2F meldet... VRTY published an extensive article about the increasing stability at Sony Pictures. Sony President and CEO John Calley told Variety that building franchises is a top priority. Flash Gordon is one of the franchise hopefuls reported to be in development at the studio, although no new details are given on this project.
C2F meldet... AICN reports seeing a script for Flash Gordon which is said to be in development by Joel Silver (Die Hard). Unlike the movie of the 1980's, this script is not campy but is said to be a "sci-fi fantasy adventure that would make Buster Crabbe proud." Some of the changes in store include the beings of the different worlds of Mongo speaking different languages and said beings believing Ming to be their savior. Mongo denizens included are Arboreans, Hawkmen, Beast Riders, Rock Men and Robots. No word on who wrote the script. The articles mentions that Johnny Depp was considered for the title role at one point.
