"Hidalgo - 3.000 Meilen zum Ruhm" (2004) ist die Verfilmung einer angeblich wahren Geschichte...
Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts schlägt sich Frank T. Hopkins , gespielt von Viggo Mortensen (u.a. Aragorn in "Der Herr der Ringe"-Trilogie), als Kurierreiter durch sein abenteuerliches Leben. Er schliesst Freundschaft mit dem heissblütigen Pferd "Hidalgo", das ihn bis nach Saudi-Arabien trägt, wo Frank sich seinen Lebentraum erfüllen will: Einmal das jährlich stattfindende Reitertunier "Ocean of Fire", das als eines der gefährlichsten gilt und über 3.000 Meilen führt, zu bestreiten - und natürlich auch zu gewinnen...
"Hidalgo" startete am 8. April 2004 in den deutschen Kinos...

[...] The film's main flaws lie in the script: poor dialogue, awkward pacing, a lame structure - not to mention the predictable ending. The first act is clumsily assembled, and most of the dialogue scenes begin awkwardly, go nowhere, and end abruptly. This trend continues through the rest of the film, though as the race progresses there is less and less talking (thank goodness). Throughout, the film builds tension, climaxes too soon, and then drags a while before gaining sufficient momentum for another half-exciting action bit. [...]

Bei AICN gibt es eine recht negative Kritik zu einer Testvorführung...
[...] half of the scenes seemed to be from other movies. There was a Black Beauty horse-on-a-ship scene...an elegant ship dinner w/overtly rude/rich people ala Titanic...a recuse scene from, well you know where...a camp setting that reminded me of Planet of the Apes (Burton version), etc. This movie just plain over-extended itself.
The one redeeming thing about this movie was Viggo. He was completely likable and seemed to nail a lot of scenes that would have been laughable with other actors (particularly an Indian Bone song scene...yes, he was singing..again.) Yet at the end, I found myself disappointed that he might follow-up a great trilogy, in which he proved he could carry a movie, with this.
This movie might be different by the time it's released...let's hope. [...]
