September 2006...

The Vatican on Wednesday condemned the film "The Golden Compass," which some have called anti-Christian, saying it promotes a cold and hopeless world without God.
In a long editorial, the Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano, also slammed Philip Pullman, the bestselling author of the book on which the family fantasy movie is based.
It was the Vatican's most stinging broadside against an author and a film since it roundly condemned "The Da Vinci Code" in 2005 and 2006.
"In Pullman's world, hope simply does not exist, because there is no salvation but only personal, individualistic capacity to control the situation and dominate events," the editorial said.
The film, which premiered earlier this month in the United States and stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, is an adaptation of Pullman's acclaimed novel "Northern Lights".
The Vatican newspaper said "honest" viewers would find it "devoid of any particular emotion apart from a great chill."
In the fantasy world created by Pullman's trilogy, 'His Dark Materials', the Church and its governing body the Magisterium, are linked to cruel experiments on children aimed at discovering the nature of sin and attempts to suppress facts that would undermine the Church's legitimacy and power.
In the film version all references to the Church have been stripped out, with director Chris Weitz keen to avoid offending religious cinema goers.
Still, some Catholic groups in the United States have called for a boycott, fearing even a diluted version of the book might draw people to read the bestselling trilogy.
The Vatican newspaper said the film and Pullman's writings showed that "when man tries to eliminate God from his horizon, everything is reduced, made sad, cold and inhumane".
The U.S.-based Catholic League, a conservative group, has urged Christians not to see the movie, saying that its objective was "to bash Christianity and promote atheism" to children.
The Vatican newspaper called the movie "the most anti-Christmas film possible" and said that it was "consoling" that its first weekend ticket sales were a disappointing $26 million.
New Line Cinema, a unit of Time Warner Inc, had hoped the film would pull in between $30 million and $40 million. It is doing better overseas but New Line sold the foreign distribution rights to help cover the movie's cost.

[10.12.2007] CS! berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse...
[...] New Line's fantasy-adventure The Golden Compass topped the box office with an estimated $26.1 million from 3,528 theaters. It's another disappointing debut for the studio this year, as expectations had the opening between $30-40 million. The movie cost at least $180 million to make plus promotions. New Line's biggest film of the year was Rush Hour 3, which collected $140.1 million, about $86 million below the total of Rush Hour 2 domestically. Written and directed by Chris Weitz, The Golden Compass stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green and Dakota Blue Richards, and features the voices of Ian McKellen, Ian McShane, Freddie Highmore and Kathy Bates. It is based on author Philip Pullman's bestselling and award-winning novel. "Compass" did have a strong international debut, grossing an estimated $55 million from 25 countries, but New Line sold off all international territories, meaning that the studio's take will be capped. [...] "The Golden Compass" is refreshingly well paced. Director Chris Weitz explains that he deliberately attempted to "error on the side of too short as long doesn't equal important". As a result, this film maintains a captivating pace throughout. The special effects are truly stunning. The performances of all the key stars, not to mention all the excellent extras, are equally as impressive. [...]

[29.11.2007] Bei AICN gibt es mehrere Kritiken...
[...] I would recommend Golden Compass to any fantasy film fan out there, but I have to admit that I don't think it fully fulfilled its potential as an adaptation of a great book, specially as it doesn't dare to be as dark and controversial as the literary version. [...]
[..] I would recommend seeing it and I might end up seeing it again. I would say that this is not a children's fantasy, more of a young adult fantasy because there are some scenes that could frighten smaller children. The plot is a bit complicated for those who have not read the book. [..]

[26.11.2007] CS! sprach mit Daniel Craig, u.a. über das geplante Sequel...
CS: I understand there's already a script for a sequel to "The Golden Compass." Have you read it yet?
There's an outline. It's a pretty good outline. I haven't looked at it. I've seen bits of it, but haven't looked at it.
CS: Assuming Golden Compass is a hit and they make a second film, and you're already signed up to do the next Bond, are you looking ahead to work both into your schedule?
That will be the plan, but it just depends on how well we do here. I try not to count chickens. I really do because there's no point. You'd go crazy. We're in good shape and I'm very happy with the way this is working out. I'd love to get involved with it. If they do another movie, I'd love to do it. We'll fit it in. It's not my job to make that work. I pay people fortunes to make that. [...]

[...] The very first scene we were shown was of Lyra playfully walking across chairs to a really long table in Oxford's Jordan College dining hall and talking to her dæmon.
In the next clip, Mrs. Coulter appears as Lyra is being lectured by a professor. "I know you don't always understand our wish to educate you. Sometimes you do what others think best," the scholar tells Lyra. Coulter then gracefully strolls in and sits next to her and whispers to her a secret and asks her not to tell anyone. "I'd never," Lyra replies.
The third scene was with Lord Asriel and he sternly scolds Lyra in the garden at Jordan College. "I will not have my niece slithering around like an alley cat." As the two are bickering, you can see Lyra's dæmon change form, while his remains the same. He comments on it and she asks him about Dust, a particle that is rumored to fuse different worlds. "What do you know about Dust," Asriel angrily asks. "Nothing," she replies. "Good, keep it that way, " adds Asriel.
We also watched an extended scene featuring Iorek, a massive armored bear who Lyra helps during her quest. Iorek runs loose through an outdoor market knocking over everything in his way. Lyra sees what's happening and starts to chase him. Armed soldiers are also after the bear and they surround him with their weapons drawn as he hides in a nearby small building. Lyra, upset by what's taking place, reasons with Iorek and he races through the wall and faces the men. Lyra runs in front of him and begs the men to not shoot. [...]

[31.01.2007] Bei gibt es einen kurzen Setbericht...
[...] Following The Golden Compass scene we witnessed with a make belief Iorek and Lyra who is perfectly portrayed by Dakota Blue Richards, we were given a tour of the "prop" room and "stunt" room and shown some incredible costumes, props, a recreation of a fight scene and the secret behind the witches' perfect flying techniques. We then had an elaborate interview with producer Deborah Forte, production designer Dennis Gassner and costume designer Ruth Meyers. Last but not least we were shown early footage of various scenes assembled for our eyes only.
Based on what I've witnessed thus far, it is safe to say that fans will not be disappointed by director Chris Weitz's fantasy screenplay adaptation of Phillip Pullman's best selling and award winning trilogy. It is obvious by the great attention that has been paid to detail, that authenticity is of utmost importance in the creation of the film, THE GOLDEN COMPASS. [...]

[05.01.2007] Bei CS! gibt es neue "The Golden Compass"-Bilder... Ausserdem gibt es bei CS! Neuigkeiten zum 2. Teil...
New Line has hired Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove) to pen The Subtle Knife, the second part of Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials."
Variety says that the move comes as New Line is in the midst of a five-month shoot on Pullman's The Golden Compass at Shepperton Studios in London. Chris Weitz is directing the $150 million "Compass" -- to be released on December 7 -- from his own script.
Amini is currently penning Drive for Universal with Hugh Jackman attached to star and Marc Platt producing. [...]
In "The Subtle Knife," Pullman introduces the character of a 12-year-old boy who has learned the art of invisibility and is seeking his missing father when he encounters a vanishing cat and joins forces with Lyra Belacqua.
Pullman's final book in the trilogy is "The Amber Spyglass."

[...] not only is The Golden Compass filming here currently, so is The Subtle Knife, the second book in the series. Or at the very least some scenes from The Subtle Knife.
Now, there might have been some rejigging, where scenes from book two have made their way into film one, or they might simply be catching some film-two footage while they're here, for cost reasons, but the fact remains, some of the scenes that have been filmed clearly take place in the modern, contemporary Oxford of Knife, not the other-world 'Lyra's Oxford' of Compass.
So, are we to assume the sequel has been greenlit and is already underway with the same team? It certainly looks like the most likely answer. [...]

[05.11.2006] Unter schreibt der Buchautor...
[...] The film of The Golden Compass is progressing very well. I spent yesterday at the studios in Shepperton, meeting some of the cast, including Sam Elliott, who's playing Lee Scoresby. Sam's resemblance to the Lee in my mind is just astonishing. His Lee has all the presence, the experience, the battered integrity, the humour, and the courage of the aeronaut who first walked into my story thirteen years ago. I can`t imagine a better cast, and the sets and costumes are just astounding. They were filming the scene where Lyra approaches Iorek Byrnison at the gyptian camp and asks him to take her to the village near the lake, because the alethiometer has told her that there`s something she needs to see there. Dakota had to speak to the empty air, because Iorek, of course, is being constructed pixel by pixel in a computer somewhere; but his voice is provided by Nonso Anozie, and a better bear you`d have to go a long way to find.
The set was constructed inside a vast sound stage, a building bigger than many aircraft hangars, and going all the way around the inside walls, from floor to distant ceiling, there was a truly enormous canvas painted with an Arctic panorama of icy mountains under a dark sky. The gyptian encampment was set up among great blocks of ice and snowdrifts - very convincing snow it was too - the tents and the firelight looking wonderfully real.
I saw the scene that had been filmed the previous day: Iorek at Trollesund charging out of the house having regained his armour, and Lyra ordering him not to kill anyone, and Lee stepping in to prevent mayhem. When you see all the several takes of the same scene, and then see many more from different angles, you really get the sense of how films are made in tiny pieces, like making each stone in a mosaic separately.
And you see how much of the work is going to be done later at the editing stage, just as it is with a novel.
Later I visited the Trollesund set. It`s unbelievably real. You`d swear these grimy battered houses had stood there for a hundred years or more; and then you walk round the back and see the raw new unpainted wood behind, the props holding it up, the weights holding it down.
And I haven't even mentioned the costumes. I can`t go on speaking in superlatives, but it all looks better than I would have thought possible.
In short, I think it`s going to be - at the very least - spectacular. [...]

[27.09.2006] CS! berichtet über das "His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass" Videospiel zum Film...
New Line has signed a video game licensing deal with Sega for "His Dark Materials," reports Variety.
The agreement, which also involves book publisher Scholastic, gives Sega interactive rights to all three books in Philip Pullman's "Dark Materials" trilogy. New Line is currently shooting first entry The Golden Compass and expects to make two more, with Sega producing companion games.
Electronic Arts has made several successful "Lord of the Rings" games not tied to the pics and recently extended its deal with New Line and books rights holder the Saul Zaentz Co. to produce more. Sega would have to make a separate deal to produce games not tied to film releases.
The studio is expected to unveil several other major licensing deals for "Materials" in the next few weeks, including a master toy license and numerous promotional partners.
Sega is already at work on the "Golden Compass" game and plans to release it on multiple consoles along with the pic next November.
