[14.01.2008] Variety.com berichtet über die internationalen Einspielergebnisse...
Will Smith's "I Am Legend" remained stellar at the foreign box office, easily winning its fourth straight frame with $36.2 million from 5,000 prints in 47 markets. [...]

[10.01.2008] Heute startet "I Am Legend" in den deutschen Kinos...

[04.01.2008] STYD berichtet über ein mögliches Sequel...
Given the box office figures, this shouldn't come as any surprise.
[...] author Richard Matheson has signed off on sequel rights for the smash hit I Am Legend. Matheson wrote the original 1954 novel upon which Francis Lawrence's film is based.
This does not necessarily mean a sequel is a "go." It simply gives Warner Bros. peace of mind should they find the right direction to take the story in and opt to move forward on a second chapter. If that does happen, it would be the first time the "Legend" material was sequelized.

[02.01.2008] Hollywoodreporter.com berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse...
[...] Warner Bros./Village Roadshow's Will Smith release "I Am Legend" grossed $38 million to finish third during its third outing. The performance left the sci-fi horror film with a cume of $205.1 million, making it the studio's third $200 million performer after similar feats by "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "300." [...]

[01.01.2008] CS! berichtet über die internationalen Einspielergebnisse...
Will Smith's I Am Legend ruled the foreign box office for a second weekend, grossing $46.1 million from 25 markets, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The Francis Lawrence-directed sci-fi actioner opened at No. 1 in the U.K. with about $21.8 million, and has earned $117 million internationally. It is expected to pass the $200 million mark in North America on Monday. [...]

[24.12.2007] CS! berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse...
[...] Dropping to second place, Will Smith's sci-fi thriller I Am Legend (Warner Bros.) took a 56% tumble to make room for the anticipated sequel, grossing $34.3 million in its second weekend after grossing over $100 million in its first week. With a gross of $137.5 million, it has already topped Ridley Scott's American Gangster as the biggest movie of the year's 4th quarter. [...]

[19.12.2007] CS! meldet...
[...] I Am Legend opened strongly, with most shows sold out at IMAX® theatres during its debut weekend, contributing $3.2 million of the record-breaking $77.4 million that the film grossed at the domestic box office, from December 14 through Sunday, December 16. The picture opened on 77 domestic IMAX screens, posting a per screen average of $41,936. I Am Legend also opened on 6 international IMAX screens, bringing the worldwide IMAX estimated total to $3.4 million.
"With 'I Am Legend,' this weekend marks the biggest December opening in not only motion picture history but IMAX history as well. [...]

[17.12.2007] Bei IESB gibt es ein Interview mit dem VFX-Supervisor Jim Berney... Und CS! meldet...
[...] In one of the most astounding weekends since the summer, two movies opened and far exceeded all expectations, predictions and studio tracking as Will Smith opened his latest sci-fi action flick I Am Legend (Warner Bros.) in December with an estimated gross of $76.5 million in regular and IMAX theatres, an average of over $21,000 per theater, setting a new opening record for Smith as well as the new record for December. [...]

[16.12.2007] Bei AICN gibt es eine recht positive Kritik von Capone...
[...] I AM LEGEND is going to surprise a lot of people expecting non-stop action or perhaps more humor from Smith, but I'm guessing Smith paid attention to the folks who criticized what he did to I, ROBOT. Here, he's playing it straight for the most part. He finds moments of humor, but much of the time the laughs are the nervous kind or the type found around gallows. [...]
This is one of the few films I've seen recently that successfully blends a small, art-house feel with a bigger budget and a sprinkling of special effects. The ending may leave people a bit miffed, but it was appropriate considering what comes before it. I AM LEGEND is a surprisingly satisfying science-fiction work that stays true to the tone of the book, while not being afraid to add a little zing in an effort to get the heart rate racing.

[03.12.2007] Bei IESB gibt es "I Am Legend" Clips & Featuretten !!! Und STYD sprach mit dem Regisseur Francis Lawrence über die Nachdrehs...
[...] For good or for worse, re-shoots on productions do often occur - yet on high-profile projects such as the latest "Legend" adaptation, when word leaks out, arched, suspicious eyebrows are raised and Internet chatter kicks up.
In Lawrence's case, he confirms final shooting was completed less than a month ago. "I'm a huge fan of pick-ups and re-shoots," he tells us. "There's this misconception that it's always a bad thing and for me it's like saying a painter only has one shot at a brush stroke. That you can't erase and do it again." Due to this production's tremendous CGI grocery list of scenes in various stages of evolution (an estimated 800 shots, he says), "we weren't seeing fully-rendered shots until about a month ago. The movie starts to take on a whole other life. It's not only until later that you can judge a movie as a whole and go, 'Huh, maybe we should shoot this little piece in the middle, or tweak this a little bit.' It just so happened that our re-shoots revolved around the end of the movie." [...]

[01.12.2007] Bei AICN gibt es eine recht negative Kritik...

[30.10.2007] IESB meldet...
IDW Publishing will re-release the definite visual adaptation of Richard Matheson's classic vampire novel.
When IDW Publishing first released its graphic adaptation of I Am Legend, Richard Matheson's classic 1954 novel of terror, isolation and vampirism, the trade paperback became an immediate best-seller and quickly sold out. Now IDW will resurrect the out-of-print books with a new deluxe collection that showcases the original novel's vision in advance of the December film adaptation starring Will Smith, from Warner Bros. Pictures. [...]
"Our book is a very faithful adaptation of the novel itself," says Chris Ryall, IDW's publisher and editor-in-chief. "The upcoming movie will tell a variation on the story, but the graphic novel adaptation is the definitive take on the Richard Matheson book that has captured generations of fans"
The adaptation's author is likewise a celebrated name among vampire fans: Steve Niles, who co-created IDW's blockbuster bloodsucker hit 30 Days of Night, being released this month from Sony Pictures and producer Sam Raimi. Niles adapted the novel with art from Elman Brown.
I Am Legend is a 244-page, b&w graphic novel.

Capone: [...] how is filming on I AM LEGEND going?
WS:
It's going great. We're taking a scheduled break right now, but we've been shooting in New York for a while. We've managed to make a small, character drama into a big special effect movies. It's that old school '70s kind of story-driven movie. The special effects are ridiculous, but we don't depend on them at all to tell our story. They are insane, but there's no dependence on them at all. You don't know it yet, but you should be looking forward to it.

[...] have some news to share about the much debated "I Am Legend" film.
They will be filming this Saturday, in my neighborhood, (the23rd) on 5th ave in Manhattan between 23 and 31st street.
BUT here's the interesting part
According to the flyers taped around the block, "Will Smith plays Robert Neville, an Army doctor who stays behind on the island on Manhattan, after a plague forces the evacuation of the island. He is immune, and has stayed behind to find a cure..." (paraphrased)
Only Manhattan is infected? A doctor? Maybe this is just an "Omega Man" remake [...]

[20.09.2006] Blackfilm.com hat weitere Darsteller bekanntgegeben...

[19.09.2006] Laut IESB wird Johnny Depp nicht mitspielen...
Remember the casting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in I Am Legend? According to our "on-set" source this rumor is pure BS, Depp never signed on and bottom line, he is not in the film. [...] The IESB can confirm that the Phillip character is not in this script and that this movie will actually be closer to The Omega Man film than the original 1954 novel written by Richard Matheson. [16.08.2006] CS! meldet...
According to Production Weekly, Warner Bros. Pictures has planned a shoot longer than six months for the Francis Lawrence-directed sci-fi actioner I Am Legend, starring Will Smith.
The movie, based on the Richard Matheson book, starts filming on September 23 and will continue until March 31 in New York.
Smith plays Robert Neville, the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.
By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.
The studio has already scheduled a November 21, 2007 release date for the film.

[04.07.2006] JoBlo.com meldet...
[...] A production source writes in to report that Depp would NOT be playing the role of Cortman/main villian in the film. Apparently that character (from Mark Protosevich's script) has been excised completely. Depp, we now learn, would be playing a fellow survivor that Smith's character finds named Philip. So no Depp as a crazy vampire/zombie leader? [...]

[01.07.2006] Laut Blackfilm.com wird Johnny Depp mitspielen...
When Will Smith was cast as the lead in the long-awaited adapted film version of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND, it was probably the worst kept secret. After all, his name had been floating around the web for the longest time. Until certain outlets that folks feel are the bible of information put the word out to confirm our story, sources tell blackfilm.com that along with Smith, JOHNNY DEPP has been added to the cast. No telling which role Depp will play, but given his penchant for playing extraordinary weird-like characters, expect a juicy plum part, like the neighbor, now one of the living dead. [...]

[23.05.2006] TAF meldet...
Is the name Arnold Schwarzenegger going to be seen at the beginning of Will Smith's I AM LEGEND next summer? Seems so according to the latest Entertainment Weekly on new stands now.
E.T. Weekly claims that Arnold and Ridley Scott left the production because of a sky-rocketing budget said to be north of 108 million (back in the 90's), but Arnold kept the producer title. There was no mention of Arnie's play or pay deal worth 25 million. Does that mean it will say executive produced by Schwarzenegger when the credits roll at the start of film and this will be an Arnold film (in some form)? Does that mean Arnie will collect royalties when the film becomes a BLOCKBUSTER? Time will tell. [...]

[27.04.2006] CS! meldet...
Will Smith will star in I Am Legend, the long-gestating Warner Bros. adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel to be directed by Constantine helmer Francis Lawrence.
Variety says Smith has a pay-or-play deal to make "Legend" his next project, after he completes Tonight, He Comes at Sony.
Akiva Goldsman rewrote the script and is producing. The Da Vinci Code screenwriter has a working relationship with Smith from his last sci-fi hit, I, Robot, and from Tonight, He Comes, which Goldsman is producing with Michael Mann, Smith and James Lassiter.
Goldsman rewrote an original script by Mark Protosevich. Goldsman will produce with Erwin Stoff, David Heyman and Neal Moritz.
Set in post-apocalyptic New York, I Am Legend is about the last healthy man following the release of a virus that decimates the population. To survive, he must battle mutants that wreak havoc during the night.
Smith's deal clears the way for Warner Bros. to plot an early 2007 start date on the actioner, which will be shot in New York.

[27.01.2006] New York Daily News meldet...
It's only fitting that Hollywood has come knocking on the multidoored and nearly shuttered Kingsbridge Armory.
The Warner Bros. studio is in the process of closing a deal to rent the armory for seven months for about $350,000, according to city officials who control the armory.
Given its troubled state, the armory, with its gigantic bay-studded roof and red brick exterior, might make a suitable set for a creepy Steven King-spawned film thriller. Something with a title like, "The Armory that Wouldn't Die."
But it's not the outside that Warner wants. It's the equally massive - and somewhat creepy - inside.
The former drill hall would be turned into a preproduction and studio set for a movie version of Richard Matheson's famed sci-fi novel, "I Am Legend."
His novel had been based in Los Angeles and features the survivor of a biological war doing battle with nocturnal mutant vampires.
The book is said to have inspired George Romero's campy, zombie-filled film favorite "Night of the Living Dead."
Warner Bros. is in the process of closing a deal with the city's Economic Development Corp. to rent the entire first-floor interior of the armory for the hefty sum of $50,000 a month. City officials said the studio plans to rent the armory's 190,950-square-foot interior from Feb. 27 through Sept. 30.
Built between 1913 and 1917, the armory - which takes up four square blocks in Kingsbridge Heights, the Bronx - once featured the largest indoor military drill space in the world. The state turned the deteriorated building over to the city in 1996, and its National Guard units shifted their training and other uses to several annex buildings.
While the city pumped money into repairing the leaky roof and crumbling exterior, its efforts to redevelop the armory into a retail-entertainment center, with community facilities, crashed in the waning years of the Giuliani administration.
The EDC's efforts to rekindle development interests remain bogged down because of the difficulty of finding new headquarters for the two Guard units that still train there, including the 258th Field Artillery, which has long been the armory's home unit.
Warner officials could not be immediately reached on details of the film, such as who would star in it. But a city official said the studio plans to shoot the entire film in various New York City locations.

[14.09.2005] Blickpunkt:Film meldet...
"Constantine"-Regisseur Francis Lawrence soll für Warner Bros. bei der bereits seit fast einem Jahrzehnt geplanten Verfilmung von Richard Mathesons Sci-Fi-Roman "I Am Legend" den Regieposten übernehmen. Ursprünglich sollte das Projekt von Ridley Scott mit Arnold Schwarzenegger verfilmt werden, später standen die Namen Michael Bay und Will Smith im Raum. [...]
Mathesons Buch aus dem Jahre 1954 war bereits zweimal verfilmt worden: 1964 unter dem Titel "The Last Man On Earth" mit Horrorlegende Vincent Price und - um einiges bekannter - 1971 als "Der Omega-Mann" mit Charlton Heston in der Hauptrolle.
