[20.03.2012] CS! meldet...
It's been more than a year since Steve Zaillian came aboard Paramount Pictures' upcoming Untitled Jack Ryan project. Today, Variety reports a new stumbling block for the film as director Jack Bender is no longer attached to direct.
Chris Pine is still attached to play the Tom Clancy character, which has previously appeared in the novel-to-screen adaptations The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears.
Producer Mace Neufeld previously spoke with ComingSoon.net about the next chapter in the popular franchise.
"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," he said. "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."
A search is said to now be underway for a replacement director.

[22.10.2010] Vulture meldet...
[...] The Shield creator Shawn Ryan has signed on to adapt Clancy's 1993 best-seller Without Remorse at Paramount Pictures, which insiders familiar with the situation tell us will be produced by Star Trek writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and the studio’s newest co-financier, David Ellison's Skydance Productions.
While Ryan is still best known for The Shield, he’s also executive producing the critically praised new F/X series Terriers, about an ex-cop and a former criminal who go into business together as private investigators. And as in Terriers, there are plenty of black-bag operations in Without Remorse: The book follows one of Clancy's recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark, and appears in the Jack Ryan novels like Patriot Games and Rainbow Six), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders tell us there's no definitive plan to make the film a "period" piece.
In fact, Paramount has been straying from orthodox interpretation of the Clancy canon late: Back in August, Vulture was first to report that Paramount had hired Lost director and executive producer Jack Bender to reboot its dormant Jack Ryan franchise in a thriller not tied to any specific Tom Clancy title. And this week, it became clear why: News broke Monday that Paramount had sold the distribution rights to Marvel properties The Avengers (due in May 2012) and Iron Man 3 (May 2013) to Walt Disney Pictures for just $115 million. Without Remorse had been kicking around for years at Paramount, but now that Marvel's big titles have vanished, there's a big push to create more in-house franchises.

[20.09.2010] Heat Vision meldet...
Screenwriter Anthony Peckham has been tapped to work on Paramount’s Jack Ryan spy thriller.
Chris Pine is attached to star as Ryan, Tom Clancy’s intelligence officer-turned-action hero, and Jack Bender ("Lost") is attached to direct. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are producing.
The studio is hoping to reboot the Clancy franchise, which has made $787 million worldwide through the course of four movies, and is developing the movie to tell the story of Ryan’s early career. The story is set in Russia, with terrorist acts as a backdrop.
The studio hopes to begin shooting this year or early next year and is hiring Peckham to prep the project for take-off.
Adam Cozad previously worked on the script.
Peckham wrote "Invictus," the film that centered on Nelson Mandela’s involvement in the 1995 World Cup rugby championships and directed by Clint Eastwood, winning the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award. He also developed a name in the action field, with Warner Bros. hiring him to write "Sherlock Holmes" and "The Book of Eli." [...]

[25.01.2008] CS! meldet...
Moviehole this morning reported that Fernando Meirelles, director of such acclaimed films as City of Men, The Constant Gardener and City of God, is the frontrunner to helm By Any Means Necessary, which may star Ryan Goslin (Lars and the Real Girl) as Tom Clancy's hero Jack Ryan, previously played by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.
Brazilian website Cinema em Cena contacted Meirelles today and he confirmed that he is considering directing By Any Means Necessary. However, he said that he is not so sure about taking the job at the moment, because he is finishing Blindness and already has another project in development.
The story will not be based on a Clancy novel but will be an original script.

[21.01.2008] Moviehole meldet...
Philip Noyce himself tells us that neither he or Harrison Ford are returning to the Jack Ryan series - but a new Jack Ryan movie is in the works... and it'll star Ryan Gosling! (at least that's what the filmmaker's heard). Noyce WAS attached to direct "By Any Mean's Necessary", briefly last year, but he's no longer involved.
Though the new film won't be based on one of Tom Clancy's books, it'll still fix on a 'Young' Ryan (just as "The Sum of All Fears" did). [...]

[26.11.2006] Moviehole meldet...
Though he’s no longer involved in the series (though he wanted to do "Sum of All Fears", the studio had other ideas), Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce, who directed Jack Ryan pics "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger", tells Moviehole that he’s heard that the wheels are in motion to put C.I.A agent Ryan back on the big screen. But no, he won’t be involved - and from the sounds of it, neither will the man who invented the popular literary character.
According to Noyce, Paramount is looking to relaunch the Jack Ryan film series - a series that began with 1990’s "The Hunt for Red October" - only this time; the film won’t be based on one of Tom Clancy’s books.
You see, the studio has the right to make a film based on the character - but not John Clark, a character that appears in his own set of Clancy novels - without the permission of author, and so they’re going to come up with their own story for a new Ryan movie.
Originally, Paramount planned on using Clancy’s "Red Rabbit" as the stencil for the next Ryan movie - even attaching Ben Affleck to the film - but after tills failed to ring for "The Sum of All Fears", starring Affleck, they ditched the idea of a ‘young Ryan’ series and of the young actor carrying on with the role. It’s assumed this new Ryan movie will feature a new lead.
Clancy is still involved in the film versions of "Splinter Cell", "Without Remorse" and "Rainbow Six".
