[26.09.2003] HollywoodReporter.com meldet...
Producer Martin Poll and screenwriter Larry Cohen filed a copyright infringement lawsuit Thursday against 20th Century Fox for the alleged theft of the ideas behind the 2003 release "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." The suit, filed in Los Angeles federal court, seeks at least $100 million in damages from the studio, Fox Filmed Entertainment and parent Fox Entertainment Group. Fox officials said they had not yet seen the complaint, but denied the claims of copyright infringement, breach of an implied contract and breach of confidence. "This is absurd nonsense," Fox studios spokeswoman Flo Grace said. "Our movie is based directly on the graphic novel by Alan Moore." According to the lawsuit, the bulk of the plot, pacing and all of the key characters depicted in "League" were originally laid out in Cohen's 1992 screenplay "Cast of Characters."

[14.07.2003] Blickpunkt:Film meldet...

[...] "James and I have talked about either the Martian story or something like 'At the Earth's Core.'"
Murphy also added that things are structured so that any and all of the current roster could return.
With this outing, fans will want to watch carefully. Just as with the comics and similar to the "X2" movie, "LXG" is filled with Easter eggs for the observant moviegoer.
"There are paintings in the British museum of the earlier Leagues, just like there are in the comics," Murphy said. "If you look closely there's a big billboard reporting the flares on Mars. There's also one of these huge banner inviting you to a 'performance this night by Mr. Moore and Mr. O'Neill.'
"There're a lot of nods to the conceit that all British literature happened." [...]

[12.07.2003] Bei CS! gibt es ein Interview mit Max Ryan... Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Harry Knowles...
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN is a film that requires a complicated review. You see the film is neither great nor terrible, but both all at once.
You see when it is working, I was transported, when it isn’t, I’m laughing at just how awful it is. The result is ultimately a very frustrating film experience for someone that wanted so much for the film to soar, but ultimately is just an unfulfilling experience. [...]

[11.07.2003] Bei CS! gibt es ein Interview mit Tony Curran... Bei Hot Fish (5/10), ZENtertainment (3/5) und Film Freak Central (0/4) gibt es ernüchternde Kritiken...
[...] Stephen Norrington's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen isn't appallingly bad only because it departs completely from its source material, but rather it's appallingly bad because it is a work of extreme cynicism and incompetence on every appreciable level. [...]

[02.07.2003] Bei ET Online gibt es ein Video-Interview mit Sean Connery...

[01.07.2003] Bei AICN gibt es ein paar Kritiken, u.a. von STUNNED1899...
[...] The film does take a little long to get going. This is typical of origin films. Sean has to gather the League. He has to capture Hyde. He has to save Venice. He has to uncover a traitor. Once it kicks into gear, it never stops. This film looks like it cost $300,000,000. Nothing but chases, fights and edge of my seat gnawing. I was in awe. [...]

[29.06.2003] IGN FilmForce liefert neue Bilder und Infos...
[...] West also spilled the beans on a proposed LXG sequel. "If this is a franchise - how can I say this without giving everything away? - I think there might be different characters created," the actor revealed. "We could try the whole Martian War of the Worlds thing in the sequel. [That's the storyline for the second comic book series.] I know they've mentioned that as a possibility. And we may shoot in Australia next time. But that's about all I know." [...]

[19.05.2003] Die Calgary Sun zitiert Sean Connery...
[...] Connery admits he thought the whole concept of literary figures-turned-crimefighters was "a bit far out," but that didn't stop him from accepting the role.
"I got offered The Lord of the Rings and I turned it down because I didn't understand it. I was offered The Matrix twice and I turned it down because I didn't understand it," recalls Connery.
"I didn't understand The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen either, but I was damned if I was going to turn it down." [...]

Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
[...] This newly posted scene, which runs 3 1/4 pages in length, is far less flippant in tone than the previous version. Also, the coda is now set in Kenya rather than at the Fantom's compound. Kenya, it should be noted, is where we first meet The League's de facto leader, hunter Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery), as he's drafted into service.
While the basic gist of the scene remains the same - Campion Bond introduces himself to The League at the end of their first mission in the hopes of getting them to take on another one - the characters are darker, less smug and more reluctant than they were in the previous version, which is closer to how they're portrayed in the comics. [...]

[14.03.2003] Bei Hundland.com gibt es das "LXG"-Poster... Und DH meldet...
The Pulse recently interviewed novelisation author K.J. Anderson about the differences between the film/novelization and the original Alan Moore five-issue comic book mini-series: "The basic concept is the same, but the overall threat, the Big Evil Plot, and the villain mastermind are all different. Some characters have been added or deleted, some character traits have been changed (unfortunately, in my opinion, because of political correctness)... but James Robinson has come up with an excellent alternative story. ... The League itself, of course, and the flavor of Victorian pulp sense-of-wonder [remain the same as they were in the comics]".

Shane West, who appears as Tom Sawyer--yes, that Tom Sawyer--opposite Sean Connery in this summer's The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, says its sequel will center on his character. "Tom's a young kid compared to the reat of the crew," West says, "but I end up kind of being the leader."

[03.02.2003] DH meldet...
Wizbang talked with Shane West recently about the changes between the comic mini-series and the final film adaptation: "The script is really very different, but it's great. The characters are the same, and the graphic novel gives you a good point of reference. [Its] a shame we could not shoot the film as written [in the comics]. But if we did, I don't think we would make any money at all. But it would be a cool movie. Part of me would like to see the comic book as a movie - a literal version of it. I'm sure many people would, and yet in this climate and time, you have to find some middle ground". He also revealed a bit about how his character of Tom Sawyer will fit into the action: "Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend) and I have this romantic triangle going on. You don't know which guy is going to end up with her or if anyone's going to in the end. Or even should...I think [Norrington's] intending to do an untraditional vampire. [Mina's disease] kind of takes her over when she actually goes into the vampire [state]. It's furious. Really animal. I mean, it's PG-13, but it's really furious. So Steve's doing many different things to create that. There are all kinds of visual effects. I also have this amazing costume, which has all these wires coming out of it, with these long tendrils of black silk. When the Cirque du Soleil performer or I move in it, there's this flurry effect. It looks like a bat".

[17.01.2003] IGN FilmForce zeigt das neue "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"-Logo...

CAMPION BOND: British, mid to late 30s, a strikingly handsome man, very cool, hip, he is Chief of the British Secret Service. Bond, flanked by soldiers, meets our heroes on the Ice Plains, apologizing for his delay in coming to their rescue. He then explains they’ve had a spy among them all along who has kept him abreast of their situation. When an aide interrupts with a note from the Queen, Bond announces that Her Majesty would like to induct the distinguished group as a real league. Although he implores them to accept the new mission, he gets no takers...
So no surprise there either. But now I believe we know why they're having so much trouble casting the role...
1 speech & 8 lines, 1 scene. THIS ROLE CLOSES THE FILM AND MAY RETURN IN SEQUEL. [...]

[25.10.2002] Bei Latino Review gibt es ein Interview mit Jason Isaacs...
LR: Are you done filming The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
Jason: "It's a very weird thing with Extraordinary Gentlemen actually, and its all over the internet and it's all over the press that I'm playing this part [Campion Bond] and I hope the checks arrive soon cause I NEVER read the script and I've never been offered the part and I'm not doing it. Some Isaacs somewhere is playing Campion Bond, it must be really pissing him off. Because everytime he opens the newspaper it talks about how much fun I'm having on the set and how I've been flooded off from PRAGUE. Very odd, I don't know where it started. I'm mean I'm sorry but I don't mean to embarrass you in anyway".

[...] If the production remains faithful to the script, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could be one of the most entertaining and fun films of 2003. The script contains great characters, cool 1800s sci-fi gadgets, and awesome action scenes. It also has some nice twists and turns. You might want to leave your preconceptions behind. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen script is not the story that Alan Moore wrote. It does capture the spirit of the comic, though. James Robinson proved that he is a great comic writer with Starman, and with his script for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen he shows he is a great screenplay writer as well.

DE: How do the sets look?
JR: They're fantastic. Stephen has reconceived the look. He hasn't been stringently true to the comic, and he has made it his own. But it looks absolutely epic. The Nautilus is absolutely epic. I think people will be more than happy with it.

[30.04.2002] Bei IGN FilmForce gibt es ein Script-Review...
[...] While I did enjoy most of James Robinson's March 2002 draft, I know that it won't be every League fan's cup of tea. Comic book purists - and they are legion - might not enjoy the film's preference for Hollywood action and adrenaline over the series' emphasis on tone and atmosphere. I've now learned enough about screenwriting, however, to understand and, for the most part, agree with the alterations made to the original story for the film version.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen should ultimately prove truer to the spirit of the Alan Moore/Kevin O' Neill miniseries than to its plot. If forced to choose between the two then I'd opt for spirit. And if the film doesn't work then at least we'll always have the graphic novels.
