Simon Smith, who co-directed DreamWorks Animations’ Bee Movie, had been tapped to direct the animation house’s untitled Madagascar spin-off starring the penguins.
Also coming on board is Lara Breay (Megamind), who will produce.
DWA put the movie project into fast-track development in March, hiring Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, the writers behind DWA's Will Ferrell-voiced Megamind, to pen the script focusing on the paramilitary parables of plucky penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico.
The quartet are the secondary but scene-stealing characters of the Madagascar movies.
The project is still a ways a way from casting anyone.
Smith is a DWA animator who has slowly but surely risen through the ranks. He was head of layout for the company’s Antz and Shrek, and a layout consultant on Shrek 2 before directing the Shrek 4-D animated attraction which is part of the Universal Studios theme park. He also directed two video shorts that were DVD extras on DWA releases: the Shrek-themed short Far Far Away Idol and Megamind: The Button of Doom. [...]
The penguins of DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar movie fame are graduating to their own feature film.
Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, the writers behind DWA's Will Ferrell-voiced Megamind, have been tapped to tackle the project, which will feature the paramilitary parables of plucky penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico.
The four paramilitary avians from Antarctica are secondary but scene-stealing characters in the Madagascar movies, the third of which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2012. In a sign of the foursome's fanning fashionability, when the first movie hit Blu-ray, "The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper," an animated short featuring the penguins, was one of the extras.
The characters were also spun off in a CGI-animated TV show titled The Penguins of Madagascar that aired on Nickelodeon; it finished 2010 as the second most-watched animated show behind SpongeBob SquarePants amongst ages 2-11. The show is now in its second season.
No release date has been set for the feature, which at this stage has no director (or, in the case of many animated films, co-directors). Schoolcraft and Simons will develop the story and write the script. [...]
Jeffrey Katzenberg has confirmed to Empire that multiple sequels are in the works [...]
Currently planned for release on May 18, 2012, Madagascar 3 will likely be followed by a fourth Madagascar film to round out the series, Katzenberg explained. The third film is said to leave open a conclusion to the series, bringing the animals back to New York where they started. [...]
Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private face off against the malevolent dolphin, Dr. Blowhole, in "The Penguins of Madagascar's" first Nickelodeon special, "Dr. Blowhole's Revenge," premiering Monday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother") guest stars in the half-hour special as the penguins' long-time nemesis out for revenge and to finally conquer the world. [...]
NBC has joined with DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. to air two all-new, family-friendly animated holiday television specials based on the studio's blockbuster feature films, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar, both featuring many of the characters as voiced by the original talent from the films.
[...] "Merry Madagascar," is based on the hugely successful smash hits, Madagascar and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which both featured the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Cedric The Entertainer and Andy Richter. The special, which also features the voice of Carl Reiner, is scheduled to broadcast on Tuesday, November 17 (8-8:30 p.m. ET) and repeat on Saturday, November 28 (8-8:30 p.m. ET) just before the holiday season. [...]
"Merry Madagascar" was written by David Soren, Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath. The executive producer is Mireille Soria; Joe Aguilar is the producer and David Soren directs. The brand new holiday adventure stars everyone's favorite Central Park "zoosters" from Madagascar and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. "Merry Madagascar" begins when Santa and his sleigh unexpectedly crash-land on the island, giving the jolly gentleman a case of amnesia. So it falls to Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria -- along with the ever-inventive Penguins -- to deliver the presents and save Christmas. And it doesn't hurt that Santa's Sleigh just might be able to make a little trip to New York City, so they can finally return to their beloved home. But during their appointed rounds, the four re-discover the magic of giving -- and that it is ultimately more important than their own wish to return home. Also included is a long-lasting North Pole/South Pole rivalry between the Penguins and Santa's reindeer, plus magic flying dust and a King Julien-based holiday called "Julienuary."

[...] DreamWorks Animation's second movie of the year, the sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, reunited the voice cast of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer, with their popular talking animals crash-landing in Central Africa. After grossing over $17 million on Friday, it brought in an estimated $63.5 million in business in more than 4,000 theaters, including a record 130 IMAX theaters. That amount would make it the highest grossing non-"Shrek" movie for the animation studio, making more in three days than the original Madagascar made over the four-day Memorial Day weekend back in 2005. The original Madagascar went on to gross $193 million, so one should expect the holidays should help the sequel gross more than $200 million, although it does have some fierce competition in weeks to come. Capone von AICN liefert seine Kritik zu "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa"...
[...] MADAGASCAR 2 is probably about as lovable and entertaining as the first film. Take that for what it's worth. If you never saw the original film, the addition of Baldwin to the cast as well as more lemurs and penguins might be enough to get your butt in the seats this time around. I think I chuckled a bit more three years later. Rock and Stiller have a better chemistry this time around, and even Schwimmer's moody giraffe made me laugh quite a bit. It's no WALL*E or even KUNG FU PANDA, but this one's not too bad. [...]
Massawyrm von AICN liefert seine Kritik zu "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa"...
[...] a movie with a few laughs and enough going on to make it worthy of seeing with your kids. The chief problem is that it is nothing new and doesn’t have nearly enough heart to wrap you up in it. Everything just feels too convenient. And really, how many times can we see the animals out of their element story done without a twist? Both Kung Fu Panda and Bolt are very similar stories that go outside of the box and offer us something radically different. This is just more of the same, and it feels like they’ve found the very last jokes to be had in this particular genre of animated film.
That said, it is nowhere near as bad as some of these sequels usually are and thus doesn’t require that you drop the kids off and see something else. [...]

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg expects at least one additional "Madagascar" sequel after Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and said that the studio, as was previously rumored, has also begun talks aimed at creating a sequel to its summer hit Kung Fu Panda.
Katzenberg said "Escape 2 Africa" is the "second chapter in one story," adding that "there is at least one more chapter. We ultimately want to see the characters make it back to New York."
An announcement about a Kung Fu Panda sequel could come within two months.
"We've started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we'll be able to talk completely about that," Katzenberg said.
Kung Fu Panda has earned $560 million worldwide. In 2005, Madagascar took in $530 million globally.

Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik zu einer Testvorführung...
[...] The film, from start to end, is an obvious cash in on the success the the original (and also just as mediocre) reaped in. Every scene just feels so cheaply written, and it's all underscored by the feeling (I could not escape) that it's a rip off of 1993's The Lion King (Disney). I'm not saying it's the same, it just feels like it was trying to hard to be that classic film.
And it's not. [...]
