Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest became the #1 DVD of the holiday season, selling nearly 5 million units on DVD in North America in its first day of release it was announced today by Bob Chapek, president of Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment.
This fete now poises Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment to finish the 2006 year owning three of the top three DVD releases of the year with "Dead Man's Chest," Cars and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Adding to these phenomenal accomplishments, the nearly 5 million DVD units sold of "Dead Man's Chest" in its first day of sales puts it on track to become the #1 selling "live-action" DVD title of all time.
CS: Having written the last two movies at the same time, does "At Worlds End" have a different tone than "Dead Man's Chest" or is it literally a continuation of where the last one left off?
Elliott:
We have actually tried to make sure that each of the three had its own identity. It would have been easier probably to simply remake "Curse of the Black Pearl" twice, but we actually wanted to insure that the movies had their own identities in of themselves, their own stories. 2 we went a little bit more comedic, broad comedic, because we were going to a far darker place with the characters, and 3, I think has… "At Worlds End" is a fairly apt title. There is sort of the idea of the end of an era, the Golden Age of Piracy coming to a close.
Rossio: I have to give a lot of credit to the studio in terms of the willingness to take risks, because these films are hugely expensive. In the case of "Dead Man's Chest," it wasn't repeating the formula, it was being something different. Gore will not shoot the same movie twice and Johnny will not give the same performance twice, they just won't, and that takes an enormous amount of trust on the part of the studio, creatively and artistically, to believe that something that is different will also work.
Elliott: Well, we're more than willing to write the same movie over and over.
Rossio: And certainly, "At Worlds End," the tone is actually different. Like Ted said, there's an epic end of the era [feel to it]. [...]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has plundered the U.K. record books to become the fastest-selling DVD of all time, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel, which went on sale November 20, sold just short of 1.5 million copies nationwide in its first week of release, accounting for one in four DVDs purchased in the U.K. this past week.
Disney said demand has been so great that it ordered one million extra copies from its plant in Mexico. (The DVD will be released December 5 in the United States.)
The Johnny Depp smash beat out the previous Week 1 sales record of 1.4 million units set by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire earlier this year. However, it falls short of the combined VHS/DVD record held by Titanic, with 2.2 million sales in its first week.
Disney said that if sales continue as they are, the DVD could sell up to three million copies by the end of the year.

[13.11.2006] Daily Mail meldet...
Keira knightley's swashbuckling days are over for good. The Oscar-nominated actress shoots her last scene today [10. November] as pirate wench Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates Of The Caribbean films and she has told the movie's producers that she doesn't want to participate in any further sequels.
Keira's co-star in the series, Johnny Depp, has already said that he would consider playing the ramshackle pirate Captain Jack Sparrow - famously modelled on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards - as long as the scripts remained good.
Depp has an added incentive to carry on with the films because he's getting a share of the lucrative Jack Sparrow merchandising.
The third instalment, At World's End, has been shooting on and off for a year. (Production shut down at one point because of bad weather.) [...]
Shooting resumed in late summer and Keira was reunited with Depp and some of England's finest actors (and most notorious mickey-takers); men such as Bill Nighy, Mackenzie Crook, Tom Hollander and Jack Davenport.
"I've been playing this girl since I was 17," Keira told me on the set of Atonement.
"I'm 21 now and I'm onto very different things, but it's fun to try to invest Elizabeth with some rebellious spirit. [...]

[11.11.2006] BBC meldet...
[...] The "feathered superstar" will be required to speak and learn a script. It will also be an official "spokesparrot" for the film.
The chosen avian will have an "outgoing personality" and "screen presence", a spokesperson for Disney said.
The auditions will be held at Disney's office in Hammersmith, west London.
Disney executives, parrot expert Peter Bloom, and Mark Harden, the Pirates Of The Caribbean animal trainer, will judge the birds on 16 November.
Mr Bloom said: "Most parrots can talk if they are given the right encouragement... Amazon parrots and African Greys are the most talkative, so anyone that owns one has got a great chance."
Mr Harden emphasised that the bird needs to be well-behaved.
"Obviously speaking is important but, ironically, when on set the most important thing is that the parrot can sit quietly on somebody's shoulder - in this case a pirate - and not muck around with the character's hair, hat or earrings." [...]

[31.10.2006] Access Niagara meldet...
From the Buffalo News:
While local and national news cameras have focused on Buffalo-area storm damage this week, a Hollywood film crew has its lenses trained on the brink of the Horseshoe Falls.
Walt Disney Studios is shooting falls-related scenes for use in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End," the third installment in the wildly successful series of swashbuckling films, scheduled for release in May.
Stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are nowhere in sight; instead, the thundering water of the falls is playing the lead role.
The studio is keeping mum on exactly how the footage of the world-famous waterfall will be used, but there is speculation that moviegoers will see Captain Jack Sparrow and his shipmates facing oblivion courtesy of the giant cataract. As was the case with "Bruce Almighty," where studio-shot Jim Carrey scenes were superimposed on actual Horseshoe Falls footage, Disney will use shots of the treacherous waters as background for scenes filmed in Hollywood.

[13.10.2006] Moviehole räumt auf mit Gerüchten...
[...] Several outlets have picked up a story suggesting that Bloom's character, Will Turner, will be killed off in a "Pirates 4". Mind you, such a film doesn't even exist, and though I'm sure Disney have suggested continuing the franchise, it's definitely far from a go-project.
A representative for Disney tells us "We are working closely with Disney and want you to know that while we cannot comment on specific plot points, such rumors are completely unfounded." [...]

[25.09.2006] Hollywoodreporter.com berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse...
Concluding three months of domination at the international boxoffice, the Walt Disney Co.'s "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" remains firmly No. 1 overseas with a weekend take of an estimated $7.6 million from 4,387 screens in 36 territories. Typical of a generally sluggish weekend, "Dead Man's Chest's" tally dropped nearly 60% from last stanza's take. Even so, it still made off with enough to snatch the top spot for the 11th time in 12 weekends. [...]

A not terribly sober Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has filmed his cameo as Johnny Depp's swashbuckling dad in "Pirates of the Caribbean 3," which is shooting somewhere in Southern California in a place called Palmdale.
Last night at Premiere magazine's decidedly swellegant Women in Hollywood Icon awards gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we heard a good story about Richards from gifted Brit actor Bill Nighy (you know him from playing a Richards like rock star in "Love Actually").
Nighy wasn't on set when Richards came for his big Hollywood moment, but he more or less confirmed for us a tale we'd heard earlier.
Richards, no stranger to substances and liquids, was left to his own devices in his trailer before his big scene. That wasn't a good idea. When the time came to shoot, he was a bit "wobbly." To keep him straight, director Gore Verbinski held Richards by the shins.
"If you'd wanted straight, then you got the wrong man," Richards replied huskily.
Richards' pirate costume, sources say, closely resembles Depp's, with a different colored bandana. The two had such a good time together that Depp kept a souvenir from Richards' short visit: a set of stairs built for Richards to get in and out of his trailer, which he signed to Depp with the salutation, "A step too far." [...]

[20.09.2006] Moviehole meldet...
According to China Daily, "Pirates of the Caribbean : At Worlds End" will be the final instalment in the current 'Pirates' series, but that doesn't mean Disney haven't already decided to do more 'Pirates' films.
Mark Zoradi, president of the Disney Motion Pictures Group said that the eagerly awaited third movie may not be the last Pirates film.
"The third film... will conclude the initial Pirates trilogy, though it is unlikely to be the last Pirates sequel," says Zoradi. [...]

[11.09.2006] CS! meldet...
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the swashbuckling summer blockbuster from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, added a new milestone on Friday, September 8, 2006 when it officially crossed the $1 billion mark ($1,002.6 billion) at the global box office, and became only the third film in history (behind Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) to achieve this extraordinary feat [...]

Und der offizielle US-Titel wurde bekanntgegeben: "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End" !!!

[29.08.2006] HollywoodReporter.com meldet...
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which reached an international gross of $555.6 million as it lorded over the foreign market for the eighth weekend in a row, helped propel Buena Vista International, the Walt Disney Co.'s overseas distribution arm, to top $1 billion at the overseas boxoffice for a remarkable 12 consecutive years. BVI's accomplishment with "Dead Man's Chest" is only one example of how this year's tentpole offerings have stimulated the overseas boxoffice after 2005's decline. 20th Century Fox International was the first this year to hit the $1 billion gong, thanks mainly to the takeoff of "Ice Age: The Meltdown" ($460 million). [...]

[21.08.2006] CS! meldet...
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest easily won its seventh straight weekend at the international box office with $25.5 million at 6,222 playdates in 51 markets, reports Variety.
The seventh victory, tying the record set by Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, drove the sequel's foreign total to $522.7 million and the worldwide total to $923.8 million -- sixth place on the list just behind Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, at $924.3 million, and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, at $926.3 million.
"Dead Man's Chest" soon will be challenging Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the No. 3 slot at $969 million combined. And with Greece and Italy still to open, "Dead Man's Chest" has a decent shot at becoming the third film after Titanic (with $1.8 billion) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.1 billion) to gross more than a billion dollars worldwide.
"Dead Man's Chest" will soon pass the foreign total for The Da Vinci Code at $532 million.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 2" setzte seine Rekordfahrt am zweiten Wochenende fort: Mit 62,2 Mio.

[10.07.2006] Blickpunkt:Film berichtet über die US-Kinocharts...
Captain Jack is back - und schreibt Filmgeschichte in den US-Kinos: Mit einem Umsatz von 132 Mio. Dollar hatte "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" das beste Wochenendergebnis aller Zeiten. [...]

With Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opening this Friday (did we mention you should stay until the end of the credits?), not much is known about the third film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, coming Memorial Day 2007.
BANG Showbiz senior editor Simon Thompson tells ComingSoon.net that he caught up with Kevin McNally, who plays Joshamee Gibbs (Captain Jack Sparrow's number two), at the premiere in London last night and asked him about the third installment.
"The only thing I can say is that we go to a completely other part of the world and we face a completely new range of baddies which are even worse than the ones we've faced before - they're really, really evil and nasty - even more so than Davy Jones, although he'll be back of course," the actor revealed.
McNally continued: "The supernatural stories stay there and there is a big new supernatural element that's much bigger than the ones we've had before."
When asked about the location for the new movie he said that they are "heading to Singapore. If I told you any more I'd have to kill you."
Chow Yun-Fat will play Captain Sao Feng, the leader of the villains that McNally refers to above.

[...] PIRATES 2 is one of the best summer entertainments I’ve seen in a while, and it manages to improve on the first film in every way. It’s smart, it’s funny, it plays out on an epic scale while still putting character first, and it builds to a conclusion that will have audiences twisting in agony as they have to wait for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3: AT WORLD’S END next summer. Basically, it’s everything fans of the first film hope it will be, but it’s also good enough to win over people who were unconvinced by that first movie. [...]

This thing wasn’t rushed, and you can tell. Every frame of what I saw had been lavished with attention and was packed with layer upon layer of things to look at and to rewatch.
[...] I hate to say this, but I found Dead Man's Chest to be a huge disappointment on a "Matrix" size level.
The first two thirds of the film work extremely well-done with Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley returning to signature form as our protagonists, and the new villain Davy Jones being even a worse menace than Barbosa was in the original, and it even has some interesting twists with some old characters [...]
The humor and wit that made the original is also there but unfortunately, it all comes crashing down with the last act of the film where it has one of the worse endings to a film in quite some time.
Let's just say that the great ending of the first film is not in the second and it literally craps on all the good this film had before.
I don't know what went though the writer's mind but it's a huge betray of what the pirates’ films were suppose to be about and you will walk out tick[ed] off and not wanting to see the third movie of this series when it finally comes out. [...]

Orlando Bloom - calling from a barge in the Caribbean, where Disney is simultaneously shooting two sequels to its $305 million-grossing 2003 hit - is jazzed about one particular scene in No. 2. ''There's a huge sword sequence, which, if it isn't the sword sequence that puts all sword sequences to bed, then I can't imagine what anyone could ever pull out of the ether to top it,'' he declares. It's a clash among three characters - including his Will Turner and Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow (pictured) - ''on a big water-mill wheel as it rolls down a hill. And we fight on top of it, and around it, and inside it. It's crazy.'' Sounds it, but we're dying to know: Will Keith Richards cameo as Jack's dad? ''We're trying to work out his tour schedule with our schedule [for No. 3],'' says producer Jerry Bruckheimer. ''We're optimistic.''
