Rob Cohen (u.a. "xXx") plante eine Live-Action Neuverfilmung von "Sindbad" - in der Titelrolle Keanu Reeves (u.a. "Matrix"-Trilogie, "Constantine")... Zwischenzeitlich hatten die Geldgeber den Geldhahn abgedreht... Und wird Regisseur Adam Shankman das "Sinbad"-Projekt realisieren...

[11.08.2009] SCI FI Wire meldet...
Adam Shankman this week updated us on his plans to direct a new Sinbad movie to take advantage of modern-day visual effects, which he now says will be his next directing gig.
"We are very close, but it's still in the script phase right now," Shankman said in a group interview last week at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting So You Think You Can Dance. "The Wibberleys [National Treasure, G-Force] have been writing it. We are, I hope, very close to cast, so we'll see."
Before Sinbad can begin filming, Shankman has to wrap up his commitments to three films as a producer and judging the next season of SYTYCD. "Right now there is no schedule, because it's such a giant CG project it's going to be a minimum of six months of prep," Shankman said. "Six or seven months of prep, actually. [...]"
Sinbad wins out over another remake project Shankman was developing, the proposed Steve Martin-starring Topper, which may never materialize after all. [...]

Adam Shankman is taking to the high notes and to the high seas for his next two helming projects.
The "Hairspray" director has signed on to helm "Bob the Musical" at Disney and "Sinbad" at Sony. [...]
Shankman is in final negotiations to direct and develop a take on classic epic adventure "Sinbad." The long-gestating project has attracted a number of helmers over the years, including John Singleton and Rob Cohen.
Story centers on Sinbad and his crew, who are marooned off the coast of China and embark on a quest to find the lamp of Aladdin. Shankman, who said it hasn't been decided which project will move into production first, admitted that the two films "couldn't be more different." [...]

[15.11.2005] Wie meldet, hat Sony Rob Cohen's "Sinbad" den Geldhahn zugedreht...
[...] In another risk-reducing move, the studio pulled the plug on "The 8th Voyage of Sinbad," a planned expensive spectacle that was to pair "Matrix" star Keanu Reeves with director Cohen. While Cohen's "The Fast and the Furious" and the first "XXX" movie were global smashes, his $135-million "Stealth" was a summer flop, grossing just $32.1 million in domestic theaters and generating a Sony loss of almost $50 million.
"It didn't seem like a good idea for us to make that movie after 'Stealth,' " Pascal says of "Sinbad." Cohen declined to comment. [...]

[30.07.2005] DH sprach mit Rob Cohen, u.a. über "Sinbad"...
Question: So what are... are you taking a break after this movie comes out or are you...
Answer: I've been developing the 8th Voyage of Sinbad - a whole new...
Question: As a live action film?
Answer: Live action, Keanu Reeves, Xiang Xi as a, you know, new, new saga of an Arab explorer in Asia in the 10th century. The idea of going back after all this ultra contemporary stuff and all of these issues in the real world I really have, you know, I have a big first-edition book collection of western exploration and, ah, ah, I have Captain Cook's diaries and the logs. It's just - to me the idea that these people who went out into the unknown and what happened when they met other cultures is just really fascinating...
Question: Are you doing it for Sony or is it... or you don't have a studio yet?
Answer: It's Sony. [...]

[14.04.2005] CS! meldet...
Entertainment Weekly caught up with XXX and Stealth director Rob Cohen who revealed new details about The 8th Voyage of Sinbad, which Columbia Pictures will distribute and Neal Moritz is producing.
Keanu Reeves will star as Sinbad the sailor, the legendary character from "The Arabian Nights." In the film, set in eighth-century China, Sinbad and his shipmates embark on a quest to find the Lamp of Aladdin. Along the way, they meet a beautiful empress and battle fantastical creatures as well as a rebellious Chinese general who threatens the kingdom with his supernatural powers.
While setting up the project, Cohen looked up famed special-effects master Ray Harryhausen, who had told Sinbad's story several times before at Sony with The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. "I met with him and said, 'I really would be honored if you would be with me on this, since none of us would be here without you.' What Ray understood in movies like 1958's 'The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad' was how to do action-fantasy-adventure at a time there was no CG. So he's coming out of retirement to be our creative consultant, our godfather," said Cohen.
What convinced the 84-year-old veteran? Keanu Reeves. "He just went, 'Oh, that's so brilliant.' Ray thinks Keanu [could be] the greatest Sinbad ever."
The magazine adds that Cohen thinks Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero) is the one for the job of the empress. Plus, Cohen says that "Sinbad's got a crew, so it's gonna be a whole interesting group of actors. I've talked to Jet Li, Djimon Hounsou and Hayden Christensen."
Cohen also said he is looking for a PG rating. "I'm gonna make it PG, so that everyone can go!"
