[...] The Spiderwick Chronicles, with the highest budget ($90 million) had a less-than-favorable showing in third place. Family-friendly tends to mean less of a drop-off, though, so we'll see if the fairly positive word of mouth can keep it afloat. [...]
[...] The Spiderwick Chronicles delivers what a family film ought to. I think there will be several children out there who are really going to dig this, and the monster designs are good enough that this could have the same effect that many of those great Harryhausen creations or Henson critters had on many of us as kids. If you have children, and you think they can handle this, there’s a good chance the whole family will walk away entertained. If you aren’t dragging a passel of children with you and your interest is more in the fantasy part than the family part you will probably still find enough to keep you entertained but don’t go in expecting a fantasy classic. This is a brisk, engaging adventure that pulls us into another world for an hour and a half, and that isn’t ever as easy as it seems. [...]

[...] Is it perfect? Naw. There's a few moments that feel a bit too exposition-y, but never quite to the level of The Golden Compass and its white dwarf-like density. Just a few, sporadic moments of "Quick, the book said that these things do this if we do that!" Nothing unforgivable, especially since the rest of the story unfurls in such an elegant, deliberate fashion. But in context, everything works.
This film comes Highly Recommend for anyone looking for a good family or fantasy film, especially those looking for something to hold them over until Prince Caspian or Half Blood Prince. This is sweet enough, endearing enough, and most importantly, good enough to find its name mentioned among those series. Without a doubt one of the more satisfying things you are bound to see this season. [...]
Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Harry Knowles... [...] This is a lush and beautiful fantasy film - the griffin flying sequence is breathtaking, the faeries are stunning. The performances by Joan Plowright and David Strathairn and in particular Mary Louise Parker anchor the adult side of the tale.
And the kids do react honestly... with awe, fear, wonder and excitement. I was genuinely surprised by this film, I didn’t expect the complexity of the family dynamic - the level of spectacle or the quality of the visual effects - and ultimately I didn’t expect to like the film and I very much did. Most of the adults in the room were really taken by how much they liked the movie, especially the parents. [...]
If you liked or loved BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA - this will really blow you away. It is leaps and bounds better than the LEMONY SNICKET movie. [...] This is a serious attempt at Family Fantasy Entertainment - very very well done. [...]
[...] "The Spiderwick Chronicles" is one of those stories that in the right hands could have been an entertaining family film. Too many elements in the story are just too familiar and feel like a "greatest hits" retread of better stories. [...]
Kids will probably be impressed by the film's visual f/x and the excitement that a loud musical score can provide. They’re a lot smarter than this material and if Hollywood knew that, they'd provide them with something that's challenging as well as entertaining. [...]

Bei CS! gibt es einen kurzen Studiobericht... [...] We met up with director Mark Waters (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls). He showed us a few clips from the film, mostly all complete with some of the amazing special effects created by Tippett Studio and ILM. One of the characters created by ILM was the Griffin, a half lion/half eagle; the animators explained how difficult it was to build that from scratch because of the intricacy of the feathers. [...]
