Clark Gregg is crossing paths with another Marvel superhero.
A regular on CBS' sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine," Gregg will reprise his role from "Iron Man" as Agent Coulson in "Thor."
The character is the latest to appear in multiple Marvel productions as the comicbook company's film division preps for the eventual production of "The Avengers," which unites Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor in one pic. Marvel has been keen on brokering deals with actors to make sure auds will recognize characters when they crossover and appear in its other films.
Gregg's Agent Coulson also will return in the upcoming "Iron Man 2." [...]

According to the Associated Press, Irish actor Stuart Townsend has left the production of Kenneth Branagh's Thor, in which he had been cast in the role of Fandral, one of the Warriors Three, over creative differences. He has already been replaced by virtual unknown Joshua Dallas, who recently appeared in the horror sequel The Descent: Part 2 (still unreleased in the States) and has a part in the George Lucas produced Red Tails.
The change in cast happened last week, just as the film was about to start shooting on Monday, and it's the second last minute replacement Townsend has faced, after being replaced by Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy in a similar situation.

[...] I've just learned that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh have chosen their THOR -- and it's Chris Hemsworth, who can currently be seen as "George Kirk" in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot and also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists on Thursday. (He's currently filming Joss Whedon's horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA, and I heard the studio was so hot on him that it cast Hemsworth in the action pic.) The 25-year-old Australian hunk is a virtual unknown here in the United States. But he played "Kim Hyde" on 171 episodes of Home and Away, the successful Oz TV series chronicling the lives and loves of the residents of Summer Bay, a small Aussie coastal town. Hemsworth is repped by partner and co-founder William Ward at ROAR management and agent Ilene Feldman. Marvel Studios has scheduled Thor for a May 20, 2011, release.
The way Chris Hemsworth got the part of Thor is one of those great Hollywood backstories that happens only once in a blue moon. Ward had found Chris during one of the manager's many scouting trips to Australia. Ward brought him to Los Angeles and really put him out there to casting directors and production executives. As for the major agencies, I hear CAA passed on the meeting, Endeavor took it but passed on repping him, and ICM was interested but dragged their feet. But Ilene Feldman understood his appeal immediately.
Chris had read for the part of Thor but wasn't given a test because a casting director had nixed him early on. I'm told Chris' younger brother Liam (who's also a ROAR client) then tested for the role of Thor, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige passed. Then, after a conversation with Ward ("You've got to reconsider Chris, he's your guy"), Feige decided to let Chris read again. And once Marvel put him on tape, it was "Oh my god". Branagh came to town last week and saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today.
What a week for Chris since, on Thursday, UA picked him as the Red Dawn lead. Brother Liam, who's only been in Los Angeles for 3 weeks and doesn't even have an agent yet, just got cast the male lead in Last Song opposite Miley Cyrus in the Disney film based on the Nicholas Sparks novel. Both brothers live in William Ward's guest house. Unreal!
Thor's character, in a nutshell, is the Viking god of thunder who wears a winged helmet and speaks in King James Bible-style English, as well as referring to himself in the third person as "the Odinson." He wields a magic hammer, and can "fly" by throwing the hammer really hard and hanging on to it. Not only is there the movie Thor, but he'll also be interacting later with the likes of Iron Man and Hulk. Marvel tapping Kenneth Branagh is considered a smart move to elevate the pic since the UK helmer has so much experience with Shakespearean battle movies.
For months now, I've been tracking this Thor process though casting directors, agents and the like. Daniel Craig reportedly turned down the lead role. Other names reputedly in consideration were Rome’s Kevin McKidd and WWE champion Triple-H, who previously entered the Marvel universe as a villainous vampire in Blade: Trinity. And also a host of little knowns. (See my previous, Those Who Would Play Thor: Unknowns?) The following actors were tested: Charlie Hunnam (the British co-star of the F/X series Sons Of Anarchy); Tom Hiddleston (award-winning British actor and RADA graduate who played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's The Gathering Storm), Alexandar Skarsgard (Stellan's son who has appeared in the HBO Iraq War miniseries Generation Kill and vampire drama True Blood), Liam Hemsworth (offered a significant role in The Expendables after Sly Stallone saw his tape), and Joel Kinnaman (some Swedish-American dude).
I'd heard Marvel wanted to finalize casting Thor this month. The pic's release was recently pushed back from July 16, 2010, to now May 20, 2011.

Kevin Feige's the President of Production at Marvel Studios, aka the Guy Who Knows All about upcoming Marvel films like Thor and The Avengers. When we spoke to him recently, we asked about both.
"We will probably be having cast announcements in the next month or so on Thor," he told us. "We’re looking to cast Loki and Odin soon, and the main female role. And we’ll also hopefully have lockdown shortly, gearing towards the beginning of production, which will be early next year. So I think there will be a lot of announcements between now and then."

[...] Some news came out earlier today from the boys at Latinoreview.com about Alexander Skarsgård being in the running for the lead Thor role after being seen having lunch with director Kenneth Branagh in Beverly Hills.
Yep, that's what we are hearing too but other names are popping up as well including Channing Tatum. However, Branagh himself does want Alex, we'll see if it works out.
But, we also got some other information about the villain in the story, Thor's brother Loki.
Loki isn't a very nice guy. He's quite treachorous actually and fancies himself the God of Mischief. He is repeatedly trying to get rid of Thor and seize the throne of Asgard for himself. One thing led to another and he ended up being the God of Evil. What will his role in Marvel's live action adaptation? Probably something similiar, we know he's the main baddie.
Who does Brannagh want to bring this evil character to life? Try Josh Hartnett. IESB sources say Hartnett has met with Brannagh as well and he is currently on a very short list to play the villain in the film.
Word is Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger's Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character. [...]

[...] "I am directing "Thor" or "The Mighty Thor" as you might like to call it," he said with a smile before clarifying what the title of the film will be. "I think it will be ‘Thor’."
MTV has spoken to other writers about why Branagh would be such a good fit for the hero. But here was finally an opportunity to hear from Branagh about what appealed to him about the project. So what’s the appeal of "Thor," Kenneth? "To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures," he enthused.
He continued excitedly, "There’s science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It’s based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way.
So who will play Branagh’s hero? Asked about the rumors of Kevin McKidd being up for the role, the director waved it off as premature speculation.
"There’s been lots of talk [about casting] - I sound like a politician - but we are too early at this stage. We’re getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting. Someone sensational is going to play the part but it is early days."
Just because Branagh hasn’t worked on a project of this scale since "Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein," fear not. This "Thor" promises to be as large as the character would seem to call out for. "It’s a chance to tell a big story on a big scale," said Branagh. "It’s a human story right in the center of a big epic scenario."

IGN caught up with Rome and Journeyman star Kevin McKidd at last night's after party for the premiere of Punisher: War Zone, starring McKidd's Rome co-star Ray Stevenson, where we asked the actor if he was still in the running for Marvel's live-action Thor movie.
McKidd confirmed for IGN that he's still a contender for the lead role and that there's been "a lot of back and forth" about the project of late, but that nothing has been determined. He acknowledged that Kenneth Branagh is directing it, a choice that makes him even more excited about the film.
McKidd stressed that the part that he's up for is indeed that of Thor and not a supporting role. This contradicts what McKidd told us last year when he suggested that Thor might be played by a younger actor and that he would be up for a different role instead.

Marvel's Thor is the latest hero from the comics and entertainment company to get the cartoon treatment.
Marvel Animation is developing and self-producing a 26 half-hour episode series based on its long-running comic book, with the series targeted to launch in fall 2010, following Marvel's live-action feature "Thor," which bows in 2010.
The animated series will follow Thor, the Norse god of thunder, as he defends his mythical home of Asgard against fantastical villains, fiendish hordes, winged creatures and angry giants. The show will take place in various worlds -- from mountainous landscapes to places of icy mists and fiery voids -- and will include many of the comic's supporting cast, including Balder the Brave, the Warriors Three and Thor's evil adopted brother, Loki.
Marvel president of animation Eric Rollman said the series is part of the company's plan to follow each live-action movie with an animated series and "offer a continued awareness in the marketplace." It already is in production on cartoon series "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," which will be available for broadcast in 2011, in time for Marvel Studios' releases of the live-action "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "The Avengers."

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct "Thor," the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige's choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn't really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on "Henry V," a bloody telling of the British king's conquest of France.
Branagh is the latest in a string of directors -- such as Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") -- with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.
Marvel will set a distributor for "Thor" shortly.
"Thor" comicbook adaptation, penned by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.
Marvel will self-finance the film via its $500 million credit facility through Merrill Lynch. Marvel used that coin to fund both "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and will do the same for the "Iron Man" sequel that has director Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr. returning.

Eagle Eye director DJ Caruso eyes Marvel's big screen adaptation of Thor.
Matthew Vaughn was first attached to direct Thor for Marvel Studios but just as was the case with X-Men 3, Vaughn has left the building. Which, in my humble opinion and considering the lack of money that both of his previous films - Layer Cake and Stardust - have been able to bring to Hollywood, it's a good thing.
So who might be able to take the mighty Mjolnir and bring Thor from the comic book page to the big screen?
Today the IESB chatted with director D.J. Caruso in an exclusive interview and talked about his upcoming thriller EAGLE EYE starring Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan.
While wrapping up, D.J. revealed a few tidbits to the IESB about the Marvel's favorite Norse God, Thor.
IESB: Would you tackle a D.C. or Marvel property and if you would, and I mean traditional man-in-tights superhero movie and if you did which movie would you like to do?
DJ Caruso: You know...I would definitely tackle it and I sort of wrestled with it before and I was always a fan of Thor growing up as a kid. I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there's something, there's a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what's happening between him and his brother and dad. That's one I've always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that.
IESB: Have there been any talks with Marvel?
DJ Caruso: I have had some talks with Marvel about it but I have not seen a screenplay. It could be something that I am interested in.

Kevin McKidd, star of NBC's upcoming time-travel series Journeyman, confirmed for SCI FI Wire - sort of - rampant rumors that he may play the title character in a big-screen version of the Marvel comic book Thor.
Speaking in a conference call on Sept. 6, McKidd (HBO's Rome) called the reports "semi-true." "I didn't know about it either until I heard the rumors and I called my agent," McKidd said. "And he went, 'Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've been talking to them about it.' But the last I heard from my agent, they're talking that they want to go for somebody much younger, a 19- or 20-year-old, for that role. So they're reconceptualizing it as we speak."
Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) is set to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, and he reportedly wants McKidd, whose credits include The Last Legion, for the lead role of the God of Thunder.
Even if a younger actor were to play Thor, McKidd hastened to add, he might still appear in the project. "I think there's the other main male character in that movie that I'm in consideration for," the Scottish actor said. "But, certainly by no means it's not in the bag or anything and, to be honest, until I read a script I don't really know. I haven't really had a look at a script. This is all still just information that's coming in. So, you know, it could be fun, but it just depends on what's on the page. I think it all starts and finishes with the quality of the script."

Marvel Studios is setting Matthew Vaughn to direct Thor, based on the Marvel Comics character. Marvel is aiming for a pre-strike production start this winter.
Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) did the adaptation of the comic book franchise that launched in 1962. Thor is a blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who's sent to Earth to protect mankind.
Vaughn's deal is closing just as Paramount releases the Vaughn-directed Stardust today.
Thor marks Vaughn's second effort at a superhero pic. He was attached to direct X-Men: The Last Stand before bowing out for personal reasons. Vaughn, who produced the Guy Ritchie-directed films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, made his directing debut with the Daniel Craig starrer Layer Cake.
