"Total Recall - Die totale Erinnerung" (1990) war ein SF-Actionkracher von Paul Verhoeven (u.a. "Starship Troopers"), basierend auf der Kurzgeschichte "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" von Philip K. Dick (u.a. "Blade Runner" und "Minority Report")...

Len Wiseman did a bit of press for this weekend's release Underworld Awakening and during our discussion, this writer pressed him for an update on Total Recall.
He told us he is just turning in his director's cut this Sunday.
"I'm very close to handing over my cut. It's going really well," he said. "The combination of mystery and emotion and action, it's coming together. Colin [Farrell] is a large part of that and I'm really happy with him."
Wiseman went on to express the most complicated and, as a director taking on the material, most surprising aspect of the sci-fi/thriller.
"I think the complexity of the dual stories was the most surprising and challenging thing," he said. "When you see Total Recall", the [Paul] Verhoeven film you experience it, it's finished. When you're involved in diving into the material again and going back into the Philip K. Dick story, you realize there is so much to be discussed about the dual stories. There's the reality story and there's the fantasy element. They're running parallel together, so you always have to keep those two alive. That's the inherent nature of the concept and what makes the concept so cool."
"I will say, at the same time, this made all of the conversation I had with my cast fun," Wiseman added. "Every little detail has to apply to both scenarios. My actors would ask, 'So, in this scene, am I - because I know that I'm lying, because I'm the double agent - how well do I act? It sounds like a silly question, but do you want the other character to see through that or am I so good as a double agent that you would never suspect I'm the best buddy or the wife.' It's all of those little things. So, that's my long way of saying the dual nature of the story was the best thing about this." [...]

[17.01.2012] Bei CS! gibt es folgende Synopsis zur Neuverfilmung...
[...] "Total Recall" is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. [...]

[26.05.2011] Slashfilm.com meldet...
With an August 2012 release date looming, shooting on Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall is set to begin next week in Toronto. We know that Colin Farrell will be Douglas Quaid and Bryan Cranston will be one of the villains but what of the two ladies in Quaid’s life, so famously portrayed by in the original Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin? Previous reports have now confirmed to be true as Wiseman’s wife, Kate Beckinsale, will be playing Lori, Quaid’s wife in his "normal" life and Jessica Biel will be Rachel, the girl Quaid meets in his spy life. Also just announced is that Bill Nighy, who played a pretty gruesome character in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, has been cast as Quatto, the leader of the resistance. [...]

The new story ditches the Martian storyline and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.
The movie has been casting up ahead of its June start in Toronto with Bryan Cranston playing the villain. Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are in negotiations for the female leads.
Hawke’s role is being kept secret and it is cameo in nature. [...]

[04.05.2011] CS! meldet...
Bokeem Woodbine is negotiating to appear in the upcoming remake of Total Recall, Variety reports.
The film is based on the 1990 Paul Verhoeven adaptation of the short Philip K. Dick story, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale." The original starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid (to be played by Colin Farrell in this version), a man who, after buying implanted memories of a vacation to Mars, begins to remember experiences tied to an elaborate conspiracy.
Woodbine, who has appeared in films that range from The Rock to Ray to Devil, would play the role of Quaid's best friend, joining Bryan Cranston as the villain and, likely, Kate Beckinsale as Quaid's wife.
Total Recall is currently eyeing an August 3, 2012 release.

[01.04.2011] CS! meldet...
ComingSoon.net has confirmed that Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") is in talks to play the villain in Columbia Pictures' Total Recall reboot. The news was first reported by Variety.
He would be joining Colin Farrell in the Len Wiseman-directed film, scheduled to hit theaters on August 3, 2012. [...]
Heat Vision has more on the storyline:
"The new story involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn't know for which side.
Cranston would play Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of Euromerica who, under the cover of protecting his people, is secretly readying an invasion of New Shanghai." [...]

[23.03.2011] Deadline meldet...
Sony Pictures is casting up its Total Recall remake, which Len Wiseman will direct with Colin Farrell starring in the role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger. There are two major female roles in the film, and several top actresses are vying for them. First, there is the role of Lori, who started out the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed original as the happy homemaker wife of Douglas Quaid, only to transform into the bride from hell. That's the role that really launched the star of Sharon Stone (who would star in Verhoeven's Basic Instinct) and I'm told that Kate Bosworth and Inglourious Basterds' Diane Kruger [UPDATE: Kruger's reps said she opted out of the reading] are reading this week for that role. Those readings began yesterday.
There is also the role of Melina, which was originated by Rachel Ticotin, playing the woman who helps the protagonist get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars. I'm told that Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are reading for that role. Studio insiders warn me that list is not inclusive, and I've heard that Jessica Biel could be in contention for Melina, Eva Green too, and that Mendes is also being considered for the Lori role. Neal Moritz is producing.

[01.08.2010] Via CS! gibt es Neuigkeiten in Sachen Neuverfilmung...
Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, "Underworld" films) is in final negotiations to direct Columbia Pictures' Total Recall, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The film will be a new, contemporized adaptation of Total Recall, which was based on the story, "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Kurt Wimmer is writing the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz will produce through his Original Film banner.
Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "Len has an incredible love of the genre and a great gift for action. He'll bring a contemporary feel to the film while taking care with everything we love about Philip K. Dick's original story."
Moritz said, "I have been trying for years to work with Len and fortunately we finally found a great project that he loves as much as we do. Len is terrifically talented and we know he is the right director to re-imagine Total Recall for a new generation of fans."
Last week, ComingSoon.net talked with Moritz, who told us a little bit about his planned revamping of the property. You can watch that video interview here.
Wiseman added, "I've always been fascinated with Philip K. Dick's short story, and I'm excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks. I love that the most crucial mystery our character is trying to solve is the one of his own soul."
Toby Jaffe will oversee production on behalf of Original Film. Tolmach and Sam Dickerman are overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. Columbia Pictures secured the rights to "Total Recall" from Miramax.

[03.06.2009] Variety.com berichtet über eine mögliche Neuverfilmung...
Wimmer to write "Total Recall," the remake of the 1990 sci-fi pic that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Wimmer has been working with the studio on "Salt," the Phillip Noyce-directed espionage thriller starring Angelina Jolie. Wimmer wrote the story for that film and shares screen credit with Brian Helgeland.
Wimmer also co-wrote the F. Gary Gray-directed "Law Abiding Citizen," which stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, for the Film Department.
"Total Recall" was resurrected for remake earlier this year by the studio and producer Neal Moritz and his Original Films banner. Pic will be a contemporized adaptation of the science fiction saga based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."
Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the film when it is ready to shoot.

[26.02.2009] THR.com berichtet über eine mögliche Neuverfilmung...
"Total Recall" is totally coming back.
Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner are in final negotiations to develop and produce for Columbia a contemporary version of "Total Recall," the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.
The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
The movie explores one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, as audiences never knew whether or not the story was a dream. Either way, the movie grossed a very real $261 million worldwide.
Carolco was behind the original movie, which was distributed by TriStar. Dimension picked up the rights for a reported $3.15 million with the aim of developing a sequel. Columbia secured the rights from Miramax, which retained them when Harvey and Bob Weinstein left to start their own company.
Calling Dick's story "prescient," Moritz said he hoped the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the "Recall" story in a fresh way.
Toby Jaffe is overseeing on behalf of Original Film. Matt Tolmach and Sam Dickerman oversee for Columbia.

[10.12.2002] DH hat ein weiteres Gerücht veröffentlicht...
"I recently worked on an independent feature which actor **** is appearing in. Needless to say I did have the odd conversation to **** on-set, especially about Total Recall. He told me they're doing a sequel - or playing with the idea - and he's already had brief chats to Dimension about reprising his character. The deal is - from what I understand - the entire cast of the first film will be reprising their roles. He had no idea about storyline yet, and either do I needless to say, but from the sounds of it, the events of the first film might have very well been an all a dream - especially if all the original leads are back. One thing he did say - and sounds reasonable - is that "Total Recall 2" is purely dependent on how well T3 does for Arnie".

[05.12.2002] Dark Horizons meldet...
There may be life in the old girl yet says 'Cranie', here's her report: "Aint it Cool ran a piece on it recently and pretty much covered it - but were a little dubious about whether it was happening. Well it is, as far as we've been told. Rachel Ticotin has been contacted it - because there's a funny side story about her meeting. No word whether Rach will take or not - but Arnie is doing this instead of a third "Conan" which recently fell through because of rights issues. Verhoven is involved (director or producer), Sharon Stone is involved, Michael Ironside is involved, Ronny Cox is involved and Lars Harrison is involved. Some guy I've never heard of Gary Goldman did a draft. Having worked on preliminary stuff for films like "Superman Lives" that never went ahead I never get too excited about these things, because they have a tendency to fall through. This one's not targeted until at least Summer 2004 or Fall 2005 so it's a long ways off".
