Disney Channel is developing a "Tron" animated series to follow the upcoming theatrical release of "Tron: Legacy."
The news was part of Disney's upfront presentation Tuesday evening to media buyers and clients, which included a preview of the "Tron" series. Geared towards kids age 6-14, the plan is to precede "Tron" with another project, a 10-part "Tron" micro-series premiering in fall 2011 on Disney XD.
Gary Marsh, entertainment president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, also offered a glimpse of "Legacy," which is at such an early juncture in the development process that only stills were available.
"Tron is another example of how we can take advantage of the intellectual property that the studio unit pays tens, if not hundreds, of millions to develop and market," said Marsh.
The "Tron" projects represent a CGI-refresh of Disney's 1982 theatrical, with "Legacy" expected to be released in December. [...]

CS! weiss mehr über die Rolle von Michael Sheen... [...] The most recent announcement was that Sheen would be playing a role in Disney's upcoming Tron Legacy and everyone automatically assumed he'd be playing a villain--why do they always assume that? Do they not realize what a nice guy he is?--but earlier, he revealed exclusively to ComingSoon.net that he would in fact be playing a nightclub host in the Tron world.
"That was amazing, because there's a lot of green screen in that," he told us, "But my stuff was mainly in this amazing set that they built because I'm a nightclub host, so they built the nightclub and there were hundreds of extras and it was one of those great scenes where there's just loads going on."
He went on to comment on the much-viewed short film (the Grid VFX Concept Test) that was used as a demo to get the film greenlit, saying that the movie has far surpassed the impressive CG work in that film. "[Director Joseph Kosinski] did that to get Disney to give the okay to make the film. Joe now says that he doesn't like people seeing that because it's moved on so much from that, and that looks awesome." [...]

CS! meldet... Walt Disney Pictures has set a December 17, 2010 release date for Tron Legacy. The move puts the highly-anticipated film up against Sony's The Green Hornet and The Smurfs, as well as Warner Bros.' Yogi Bear (We assume at least "Smurfs" will move, since that's two Sony releases on the same date.)
Tron Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, James Frain, Beau Garrett and Michael Sheen.
In the 3D adventure, Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. IESB sprach auf der San Diego Comic-Con mit Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Joe Kosinski, Steve Lisberger und Oren Aviv über "Tron Legacy"... Q: [...] Can you talk about the look of Tron City and what that new world will be like?
Lisberger: The world of Tron has evolved. It's like an aquarium, disconnected from the outside world for 20 or 25 years. As it's continued to evolve and grow, the simulation has gotten more perfect and more realistic. The scale of the world is much bigger than it was before, with the realism, the physics and the visceral quality of it. I want the film to feel like we went in and shot everything with motion picture cameras. The line between what is real and now should be blurred, so you can't tell the difference. [...] Q: Are there any nods to the original Tron, in this?
Kosinski: Yeah, I think for fans of the original film, there's going to be a lot in there for them to discover. It's a movie that, even if you haven't seen the original Tron, you'll be able to sit down, watch this and get totally wrapped up in the world. But, if you are a hard-core fan, there are a lot of things hidden in the film that you'll enjoy. Our crew worked very hard to make sure that everything lined up perfectly with the Tron legacy. [...] Q: Are you considering this film a remake, a sequel or a spin-off story?
Lisberger: If you come to this movie, you don't have to have any prior knowledge of the Tron universe or mythology. This movie is a stand-alone, entertaining movie. What we did do is look very closely at the 1982 movie, and we talked a lot. We tried to build the mythology between 1982 and 2010. This movie takes place in 2010, but accepts the history of what happened between 1982 and 2010 really happened. It heavily considers the original, and accepts the events of the original as true fact and back-story, for our story. But, our story is a stand-alone story.

io9.com meldet... Director Joe Kosinski is already filming Tron 2, and he'll show audiences what he's come up with so far at this year's San Diego Comic-Con... But don't expect it to look like the finished movie.
At today's Radical Studios panel, publisher Barry Levine talked about Kosinksi's summer plans while discussing Oblivion, the director's "illustrated novel" they plan to publish next year:
Joseph Kosinski is directing Tron 2, and last year he did amazingly well at [San Diego Comic-Con] where he showed that test and had 6000 people show up. This year, he's going to have a trailer, not of the entire film, but just what he's been shooting. He started shooting in April, and given his pedigree and what I know about the film and what I know about Joe... the film will be amazing. So he'll show that trailer there. [...]

Bei MTV.com gibt es ein Video-Interview mit Olivia Wilde... [...] "It’s going to be a kind of revolution in filmmaking and film watching," Olivia Wilde promised MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet.
"Now that everyone has such great entertainment systems in their house," she continued, "they don’t need to go to the movies anymore, but we’re going to give them a reason to. Not only will it be 3-D, but they’ll be seeing things they’ve never seen before in film."
Recently, we learned the "Tron 2" production is shying away from green-screen in favor of actual sets, and Wilde says the end result will - more or less - blow your mind. "It’s beyond 21st century," she stated. "I don’t know what century we’re in but it’s new."
If that wasn’t enough, Wilde maintains the reverberations from the sequel will extend far beyond the Hollywood hills. "It’ll really, I think, spark not only excitement in the film community but also in the fashion community. I mean the stuff that they’ve designed is so incredible that I think it’s going to have a ripple effect and people will be very inspired." [...]

THR.com meldet...
Disney has picked up-and-comer Garrett Hedlund to star in "Tron," the studio's sequel to the 1982 cult classic by the same name being directed by Joseph Kosinski.
Hedlund, who made his debut in 2004's "Troy," has until now acted in larger ensemble pieces. He was one of the football players in Peter Berg's "Friday Night Lights," one of the foursome in the ensemble thriller "Four Brothers," a supporting player in the fantasy film "Eragon," and he appeared opposite Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman in "Georgia Rule."
Hedlund has been considered one of those actors that is on the cusp within the industry, though without much of a profile in middle America. Starring in a $100-plus million effects-intensive feature could change that.
Disney cast a wide net as it searched for the role that, because of the title, generated a lot of interest. Such potential leads as Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine met on the project, while Michael Stahl-David ("Cloverfield') was one of the those that screen-tested.
Hedlund will play the lead, a man who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn.
Jeff Bridges is reprising the role of Flynn, who was a computer programr but ended up as the CEO of a software corporation. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which was known as "Tron 2" and "Tr2n" but it now going with the simple "Tron."
Sean Bailey is producing along with Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film, and Jeff Silver. The movie is eyeing a spring shoot. [...]

SciFi.com sprach mit Olivia Wilde... [...] They're going to build a huge amount of the set. The director, Joe Kosinski, has made some unbelievable commercials. People can check out his Web site. He's just a really talented guy. And he's a really big fan of using as much sets as you can, because he's an architect as well, so he likes to build these worlds. And with something like Tron, I think it helps to create the environment as much as possible without too much green screen so that these characters can exist within this world, ... with the feel ... as real as possible.
