Insgesamt stehe "The Village" jetzt international bei 80,6 Mio. Dollar. [...]

[31.07.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Moriarty...
[...] The truth is that M. Night Shyamalan is obviously an enormously talented man, and for that reason, giving him a pass on a film like this is a disservice to him. He is capable of better, and no matter how much talent he brings to bear on this story, there's simply nothing underneath. It's a magic trick with no finish, a joke with no punchline. THE VILLAGE is going to buckle under the weight of word-of-mouth, and only his most ardent apologists are going to buy into this one. [...]

[30.07.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Harry Knowles...
[...] I feel that Manoj has once again crafted an exquisite story of simple beauty and scope. A small tale with universal strengths to touch and affect. I loved in particular the performances of Adrien Brody, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver and the precociously beautiful Bryce Dallas Howard, the latest Howard to grace the screens. Also a special shout out goes to James Newton Howard's wonderful score, again, this is a composer that has found his Director to do his best work with. Great work!
Shyamalan's direction is again at his patient pace. Told deliberately and purposefully. Allowing the story to breathe, the actors to perform and the scenes to unfold. However, with all things... there will be different perceptions. [...]

[30.07.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Quint...
[...] I'm a huge M. Night fan, but I can not be an M. Night apologist. I was pulling for THE VILLAGE to work, I really was. But it doesn't. Sure, there are a few moments of great tension (the first arrival of Those Who Are Not Talked About and the run-in with one of them in the woods, specifically) and there is one really strong relationship (the quiet love between Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard, resulting in one great scene with them together on a porch). But, most tension is broken by taking away the threat so early on or giving away a plot point right in the middle of the scene [...]

[19.07.2004] CS! meldet...
According to the Associated Press, the Sci Fi Channel admitted Friday that it lied last month in claiming it was at odds with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and was making an unauthorized biography about his "buried secret." The hoax was part of a "guerilla marketing campaign" that went too far, network president Bonnie Hammer said.
The network announced in December that the reclusive Shyamalan, maker of The Sixth Sense and Signs, had agreed to participate in a documentary about his life to run in connection with this summer's release of his new movie, The Village.
Sci Fi said last month, however, that Shyamalan had soured on the documentary when the questions got too personal. Documentarians Nathaniel Kahn and Callum Greene pressed on and made a three-hour film, "The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan," without his cooperation, the network said.
In an interview, Greene described how Shyamalan's "cooperation dried up." A network spokesman told the AP that Sci Fi was confident it had legal grounds to air the film and would probably never work with Shyamalan again. In a news release, Sci Fi said Shyamalan had attempted to shut down production of the "disturbing expose."
It was all a lie, and there is no buried secret, Hammer said Friday. "We created a fictional special that was part-fact and part-fiction, and Night was part of the creation from the beginning," the network chief said. [...]

The Philadelphia Daily News reports that M. Night Shyamalan and crew quietly set up shop in Chadds Ford, Chester County, this week to shoot additional footage for The Village.
Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Joaquin Phoenix, and Bryce Howard were present for a three-day shoot, which, several crewmembers say, was the filming of a new ending.
The Gladwyne-based director's sixth film is scheduled for a July 30 release and had filmed in Chadds Ford last year, from October through December.
A studio spokesperson said the shooting did not involve a new ending, but since the ending has been leaked online already there's always a possibility that this is indeed the case.

[06.02.2004] Empire Online sprach mit Sigourney Weaver über ihre Rolle in "The Village"...
"I play Alice Hunt who's a widow - she's one of a group called The Elders of the village. It's a kind of a communal village and there's a group of people who run things very democratically. I'm Joaquin Phoenix's mother and he plays a very extraordinary, shy young man who's also very brave. It's a fabulous story on a lot of levels - not just scary but very interesting. I had nightmares for two weeks just reading it - so I think it's going to be very scary!"

[...] "The reason we have chosen to shoot in this area is because of the community itself," says Sam Mercer, a producer who has worked with Shyamalan on all of his films since "The Sixth Sense." "It's a real cross-section of America and a family-oriented community that we believe just energizes our films. Plus, there is a wonderful talent pool and crew base that we've been able to work with here."
Shooting in the region is so important to Shyamalan and his team, Mercer adds, that they have pushed hard to ensure that each of their films would set up shop near Philadelphia -- flying in the face of recent industry runaway production trends.
"Economics are important in putting together any movie and you always have to keep an eye on the bottom line no matter how much success you've had," Mercer observes. "But we work pretty efficiently and feel strongly about the importance of shooting here, so we've fought to do it." [...]

[22.10.2003] Bei DH gibt es einen Set-Bericht von 'Casey'...
"Shooting did indeed begin on M. Night Shaymalan's "The Village" in a very remote location within Delaware County in Pennsylvania, which is about 30 minutes from Philadelphia proper - close to the border with Delaware. What I can tell you is that the village is made up of about 7 or 8 buildings that are made to look as if they were built in the early part of the 19th century. A good part of the filming that took place on Friday occured around a community supper amongst large brown tables outside of the schoolhouse and meeting house - scenes which included William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, and Adrien Brody. The action in the scene, which included about 100 other actors, is interrupted by a horribly disturbing noise coming from the surrounding woods.
Speaking of the woods, the village is in the center of acres of grassy and slightly hilly land. The perimiter of the land is surrounded by a thick forest, of which an eye is kept, for the protection of the village, by two large lookout towers at opposite ends of the property, and old-style lantern light poles with long, yellow flags line perimiter as well. In one spot lies a small cemetary on a hill near the border. The village is very cut off from others, making the fact that, in the 1800's, villages are far and few between and has troubles of its own, is believable. Try that idea NOW in 2003, where town properties overlap each other. You couldn't find this set if you wanted to, as it is very tucked away and the crew is carted in from a separate location".

Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
[...] Shyamalan wouldn't pull one twist ending only to try to convince us of the same thing a second time, and then do the exact same twist again. He would realize how incredibly insulting that is, and he would come up with something far more clever. He wouldn't turn the last act into something as lame as a blind girl being stalked for cheap thrills, especially with a payoff as lame as the one here. He wouldn't turn his entire film into a rather pedantic and obvious attack on the notion of a society based on capitalism, especially not if sending the mixed message that modern science might be worth such minor inconveniences as greed, the dissolution of the family, and murder. Nope. I have faith. I have faith that this is all an elaborate prank, played on the Internet, by a storyteller who has something fun and original up his sleeve that he doesn't want to see spoiled.
At least, that's what I'd be praying if I had money in this thing. Because if I'm wrong... if by some chance this is the actual script that's going to be used... then a few things are apparent. One, everybody who's reviewed it so far has been polite, overly respectful, when the script deserves open scorn. Two, this will be this director's BATTLEFIELD EARTH or SHOWGIRLS, an epic miscalculation that gets stuck in the audience's craw for a while, and it will take something really special to buy his way out of the cinematic doghouse this will earn him. Three, this will infuriate audiences across the board. They'll feel cheated, and they'll be right.
But like I said... can't be. It just can't. [...]

[23.09.2003] Bei Screenwriter's Voice gibt es ein negatives Script-Review... Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
[...] The Woods is both compelling and not, a departure for Night and a knockoff of his own work, a clever story and a dumb one, a sincere drama and a manipulated device -- it's right on the fence and can be knocked easily either way. I'm still not sure exactly how I feel, but I do know it pissed me off.
At this point Night has painted himself into a corner: since he refuses to make a movie that doesn't zing you at the end, people have stopped watching his movies as movies -- they are now puzzles. Watch for the clues and foreshadowing, figure out the end, and win a prize made entirely of your own self-satisfaction. The stories aren't important to audience members now; it's all about figuring out what they're "really" watching. And it's too bad Night is in this trap, because I know he has a purely fantastic movie in him. But the only true twist in this story is that Night is eschewing risk, safely plodding in the shallow furrow made by people's expectations.

"Blue Car" star Agnes Bruckner will team with Patricia Clarkson to star in "The Woods" for United Artists and director Lucky McKee. Shooting is scheduled to start Sept. 15 in Montreal. In addition to casting the rest of the film, MGM's specialty arm and the producers are clearing up any potential title dispute with M. Night Shyamalan's "The Woods" at the Walt Disney Co., and it looks as if McKee's project will get to keep its name. A Disney spokesman said Wednesday that Shyamalan's "The Woods" is just a working title.

The star-studded lineup of director M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming thriller "The Woods" continues to expand as Oscar winner Adrien Brody is in negotiations to join the film's ensemble cast. [...] Brody, whose breakout role in last year's "The Pianist" earned him a best actor Academy Award, can next be seen in the upcoming Paramount Classics musical "The Singing Detective," scheduled for an Oct. 24 release. Brody is repped by CAA and the Firm.

[11.07.2003] Harry von AICN berichtet über Lucky McKee's "The Woods" und M. Night Shyamalan's "The Woods"...
The big one of significance to all us geeks is what is going on with Lucky McKee's project once known as THE WOODS. Well, when M. Night Shyamalan announced that his project was called THE WOODS, the folks at MGM advised Lucky that he needed to change the name of his film, lest being confused with M. Night's project, which... well obviously you'd never want to be confused with an M. Night film and the stigma that that leaves one with.
However, try as Lucky may, he hasn't been able to quite nail the title yet. I've suggested THE THICKET, SHRUBBERY and TREES, but Lucky just sort of... well, he ignored me. The Great News regarding Lucky's timber affair is that it has the GREEN LIGHT! Yes, that's right, the all systems go news, which means that Lucky is as of now busily assembling his cast and crew, which I'm sure will include the amazing fantastic Angela Bettis and the film is supposed to shoot up in Toronto I hear.
[...] I just got the drop and had it confirmed that Sigourney Weaver will be teaming up with William Hurt on the film for the first time since that really great suspense thriller EYEWITNESS back in 1981. Wonder if M. Night is a fan of that flick? Best thing about that film is the charisma between Sigourney and William... surprised that it has taken 22 years for somebody to pair them up again.

[12.07.2003] Hollywood Reporter meldet...
William Hurt is the latest name to come aboard director M. Night Shyamalan's next project, "The Woods" for the Walt Disney Co. Hurt joins Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard in the thriller's ensemble cast. Set in 1897, "Woods" revolves around a close-knit community that lives with the frightening knowledge that a mythical race of creatures resides in the woods around them. Shyamalan, who penned the "Woods" script, is also producing along with Scott Rudin and Sam Mercer. Walt Disney Studios chairman Richard Cook and production president Nina Jacobson are overseeing for the studio. Hurt's resume includes roles in such hits as "The Big Chill" and "Broadcast News." Although this marks his first time working with Shyamalan, he has worked with Disney before on last year's "Tuck Everlasting." Hurt is repped by WMA.

[30.05.2003] DH meldet...
[...] Kirsten Dunst has left the M. Night Shyamalan project "The Woods", the role will be taken over by Ron Howard's daughter Bryce Dallas. [...]

[25.05.2003] Welche Kreaturen lauern wohl in "The Woods" !?! Bigfoot, Panther, Albatwitches, Steingiganten !?!
[...] Basically, I have no freakin' idea what's in The Woods! Shyamalan has probably invented some completely original "mythical race of creatures." As I've explained, though, that would be out of step with his history of taking established lore, assuming it's true and then having everyday people encounter a certain fantastic something. Perhaps that "something" is one of the above.
