FILME A-Z

On Tuesday, Steven Spielberg appeared in LA after a screening of a new digital print of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The print was created from the same new master files that will ultimately be used to create a Blu-ray release. And in a move that will likely delight fans, he expressed regret over alterations made to E.T. a few years ago, where guns were digitally replaced with walkie-talkies, and says that the Blu-ray release of that film will be the original 1982 version. [...]
"For myself, I tried [changing a film] once and lived to regret it. Not because of fan outrage, but because I was disappointed in myself. I got overly sensitive to [some of the reaction] to E.T., and I thought if technology evolved, [I might go in and change some things]...it was OK for a while, but I realized what I had done was I had robbed people who loved E.T. of their memories of E.T. [...] If I put just one cut of E.T. on Blu-ray and it was the 1982, would anyone object to that? [The crowd yells "NO!" in unison.] OK, so be it."

[19.07.2005] Moviehole meldet...
20-something years after their pinkies first touched, beer-guzzling Halloween-loving E.T The Extra Terrestrial and cutesy-pie Gertie are eyeing a re-team.
Steven Spielberg and Drew Barrymore have apparently been discussing a possible sequel to his 1982 blockbuster "E.T", something he said he'd never do. Apparently, it's the Charlie's Angel who has coaxed captain big-bucks into re-considering.v "Drew has spoken to Steven about it", says SouthFlorida.com. "Although he thought she was joking at first, he's actually giving it serious thought. Drew thinks the world needs another feel-good movie like 'ET' right now and she's prepared to work with Steven to make it happen".
In the new film, ET would meet up with his now-adult friend Elliott as part of a desperate bid to save his alien race from being wiped out.
Besides Barrymore, it isn't known how many of the original stars - which also included Dee Wallace-Stone, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, C.Thomas Howell and Erika Eleniak - would be involved. I'm confident that if it's not Dreamworks decision - the not-so-busy originals would be keen for a reprise.
A few years back Spielberg re-released the original "E.T", and was asked at the time whether he'd consider bringing the Condom Full of Peanuts back for a second stint.v "I thought about doing a sequel in the intoxication of the success of E.T. [but then] realized it's a very perfect story."
Spielberg continued, "It ended exactly where it should have ended. There is no postscript to it. If people are hungry for a sequel, they should go see this 20th anniversary re-release, because there ain't gonna be one."
Moviehole chatted to a couple of the film's original stars - Dee Wallace-Stone and Erika Eleniak about a potential sequel.
"When you make a sequel to a classic, it isn't classic anymore. ET is a classic," explains Wallace-Stone.
"One can only speculate why a sequel has never been done. The film was so amazing and really a piece of film history. Sometimes sequels have a hard time living up to the original, although, if anyone could do it, Steven Spielberg could!" adds Eleniak.
After the success of the first film, Spielberg penned a treatment for a second, "E.T 2 : Nocturnal Fears" which had some evil aliens, led by a chap named Korel, invading Earth. Guess which STD-user comes to the rescue?
I personally say to fans - don't hold your breath, but Barrymore may be pretty persuasive [...] so you never never know.

[13.06.2002] Sci Fi Wire zitiert Steven Spielberg...
Steven Spielberg, whose film A.I. Artificial Intelligence received five Saturn Awards on June 10, told SCI FI Wire that aside from the next installment in the Indiana Jones series, he does not plan to produce sequels to many of his most popular films. "There'll never be another Back to the Future... There'll never be another E.T. [the Extra-Terrestrial]. I won't do another Close Encounters [of the Third Kind]." [...]
Spielberg pledged that he would be offering plenty in the way of original SF films in the future to please fans who might be hoping for an E.T. 2. "The great thing about science fiction is it celebrates the imagination. Science fiction is great for originals. So hopefully I'll be producing a lot of original sci-fi for you to make up for the sequels I'm not making."

[07.06.2002] Bei Coming Soon! gibt es eine Variety-Meldung, laut der es eine limitierte "E.T."-DVD geben wird...
[...] The double-disc Limited Edition "E.T." DVD features 10 hours of extras. Spielberg appears in original featurettes describing all facets of the production of the original 1982 theatrical release and the updated 20th anniversary theatrical release earlier this year.
Another unique element is the isolated track of John Williams' score, which he updated for the re-release, and video of him conducting a 100-piece orchestra at this year's premiere, complete with a four-minute overture and light show. [...]

Spielberg: "There is no postscript to it."

[09.03.2002] Bei Moviehole gibt es eine positive Kritik...
[...] Even after such advances in technology, Spielberg’s film still works a treat. The special effects look a little passé in some scenes (the flying bicycles are blue screen at it’s worst); but the mechanics devised for E.T himself are miraculous. One wonders whether today’s actors could ask so emotional towards a CGI style E.T if it were a film of 2002. At the same time, Melissa Mathison’s script is a timeless piece of divine floss - roofed in emotion, laughs and adventure. And best of all, it’s a film that the whole family can actually see together. [...]

[01.03.2002] Bei Moviehole gibt es ein Interview mit Dee Wallace-Stone und Erika Eleniak...
[...] "I had no idea how big and amazing this film would turn out to be. I was told very little about the story... only that it was about a boy and an alien and that the film was called "A Boy’s Life". When I was finished filming - that was that- until I saw it in a theater. And boy was I wide-eyed and stunned!!!" [...] Although Spielberg mulled about it for years, a sequel was never made. "When you make a sequel to a classic, it isn't classic anymore. ET is a classic", explains Wallace-Stone. "One can only speculate why a sequel has never been done. The film was so amazing and really a piece of film history. Sometimes sequels have a hard time living up to the original, although, if anyone could do it Steven Spielberg could!!" says Eleniak. [...]

[...] The most annoying aspect of the new visual effects were that they did not fit in with the original footage of E.T. One minute he's hopping around, moving fluidly in decent -- DECENT -- cgi, and the next minute he's wobbling around in the original footage, with different bodily dimensions (the change in arm thickness was very annoying). [...] I am angry, though. It might be too early to say, but this just might have had a negative impact on my view of the original version of this film. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate the Special Edition...people that haven't seen this movie will love it, but I was not as much disappointed as much as I was hurt by the unnecessary changing of a terrific film.

[...] With all the buzz about for E.T at the moment, one wonders if a sequel is still a possibility. "On the last day of filming, as we wrapped, Steven told me that he was going to make a sequel when Elliot turned 18. I guess in the intervening years he had time to ponder, "why mess with success?" Also, the "skin" of ET has deteriorated. We couldn't use it for publicity appearances for instance, so perhaps that's another reason why they didn't".
