CS! berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse... Casino Royale has shot past the worldwide record for a James Bond movie, thanks mostly to a strong international performance over the Christmas holiday weekend, reports Variety.
The 21st 007 installment earned $14.5 million at 6,300 theaters overseas during the weekend through Sunday, lifting the foreign total to $304.4 million -- the 41st biggest international gross of all time. It's only the fourth 2006 movie to clear $300 million, joining Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown.
With domestic gross near $144 million, "Casino" has a worldwide total of $448 million - $17 million better than Die Another Day, the previous best Bond performer.

IGN weiss mehr über den Bond #22... The follow-up to Casino Royale will reportedly be based on the Ian Fleming short story Risico, which appeared in his 1960 book For Your Eyes Only.
"Bosses were so pleased with how well Casino Royale has been received that work has already commenced on Risico at Pinewood Studios," claimed a source for the British tabloid The Sun. "Some of the same characters will crop up again. But one of the main aspects will be to develop Bond's complex personality."
The problem with Risico is that its basic plot and characters was already used for the 1981 film version of For Your Eyes Only. In Fleming's Risico, 007 is sent to Italy to investigate a heroin ring and crosses paths with the likes of Colombo and Kristatos, both of whom were featured in the Roger Moore movie. [...]
It seems plausible that screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade might use the gist of Risico -- 007 in the Mediterranean to investigate a crime ring -- while adding and adjusting other elements to fit with the series' newly adopted down-to-earth, character-driven approach.
Wade recently advised the BBC, "In the next film the emphasis has to be on the unfinished emotional business at the end of Casino Royale. It has to be dealt with in such a way that his character continues to have an arc. ... It can't just be he's tough and he's tempered steel and totally impervious. There are things he still has to resolve. So that's the legacy of Casino Royale and it's important to have it so the actor has something to play."
Eva Green, who played Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, recently revealed that Vesper's French-Algerian boyfriend may be the villain of the next film, while Daniel Craig advised IGN that the sequel will see 007 going after "the threat behind the threat."

CS! berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse... Casino Royale won its fourth straight weekend at the international box office with $36.2 million at 7,730 theaters in 63 markets, reports Variety.
The Sony release faced its first serious rival for the top overseas slot, with Warner Bros.' Happy Feet stepping its way into major markets with a solid $25.4 million at 6,000 theaters in 37 territories.
Casino Royale now has earned $247.2 million internationally and $376 million worldwide -- just $55 million short of the Bond pic record set by Die Another Day in 2002. Its best performance came in the U.K. with $5.7 million at 952 in its fourth weekend, pushing the British total to $80.5 million. [...]
[04.12.2006]
CS! berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse... Casino Royale dominated overseas for a third straight weekend, earning $44.7 million at 6,770 theaters in 54 markets. The film has now cashed in $196.5 million internationally and $312.4 million worldwide.
Thanks to impressive European holdovers, the 21st James Bond installment took in more than the combined grosses of the next four Hollywood pics -- Flushed Away, The Departed, "Borat" and Happy Feet.
With openings next weekend in Australia and Mexico plus a track record of respectable staying power, "Casino" looks likely to top the worldwide Bond film record of $431 million set by Die Another Day.

Insomniac Mania verbreitet Gerüchte zum "Bond #22"-Bösewicht... [...] Apparently "Casino Royale" star, Eva Green, has let slip that the main villain in the next movie will actually be the boyfriend of the character she played in "Casino Royale".
Given the few lines about her boyfriend in that movie, and the films somewhat twisty ending, I would say this snippet of information sounds reliable! [...]

CS! berichtet über die US-Kinocharts... [...] Newcomers were no competition for Happy Feet and Casino Royale over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as the two hits remained firmly in first and second, respectively. [...]
Casino Royale collected $45.1 million in five days, and $31 million in the three-day portion. With a total of $94.2 million after 10 days, the 21st James Bond installment will likely become the highest-grossing 007 film in the franchise's history. It cost about $150 million to make.

[21.11.2006]
CS! berichtet über die Einspielergebnisse... Casino Royale dominated at the international box office this weekend with $42.2 million at 3,063 playdates in 27 markets, reports Variety. Including North America, that puts the 21st James Bond movie at $82.8 million worldwide after its first weekend.
The film hit the jackpot in its U.K. launch with $25.6 million at 988 theaters, including $3.7 million in previews. Its Friday-Sunday take tied Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the second-highest weekend launch in British history, trailing only Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
With Daniel Craig in his first turn as Bond, the British opening handily topped the previous Bond pic, Die Another Day, by 46%.
Given the strong international track record of recent Bond pics -- with foreign gross accounting for nearly two-thirds of worldwide box office -- Casino Royale looks poised for potent overseas business that could eclipse the $271 million mark set by Die Another Day four years ago.
Sony has opted to wait until next weekend to launch the film in other major European markets, including France, Germany, Holland, Spain and Sweden.

[...] Sony's relaunch of the 007 franchise with Casino Royale got a strong head start with an estimated opening day gross of $14.4 million, according to ShowBIZ Data. That's roughly two million dollars less than Die Another Day, the last installment of the franchise, grossed its opening day two years ago, but it's a fine start for the new Bond, Daniel Craig, having received nearly unanimous rave reviews over the past week. [...]

Bei AICN gibt es eine "Casino Royale"-Kritik von Vern... [...] Daniel Craig. To my ignorant eyes he's the best Bond hands down. He's as cool as Brosnan, as manly as Connery, but more complicated than any of them. He has more going on behind his eyes. His emotions are repressed, which means he actually has emotions. He's this cold-hearted bastard but then he does something nice to somebody and you realize there is something close to three dimensions here. AND he knows how to chase a guy up a crane. It's good stuff.
I guarantee you most of those skeptics will be won over as soon as they see the movie. If you want them to go in and CGI some brown hair on him I'm sure they could do that for the DVD, but I bet you'll realize it's not needed. The only downside is he'll probaly get stuck doing mostly James Bond for years and years, and we'll miss out on seeing him in other roles. [...]

CS! berichtet über die UK-Einspielergebnisse... Casino Royale shook up the U.K. box office during its first day of release on Thursday, earning more than any other film in the James Bond franchise, reports Reuters.
The 21st 007 installment, which marks the debut of Daniel Craig, sold 1.7 million pounds ($3.2 million) worth of tickets, a 54 percent increase over comparable sales for the previous Bond film and first-day record-holder, 2002's Die Another Day.
In all, two-thirds of all movie tickets sold in Britain were for Casino Royale.
[16.11.2006]
Bei AICN gibt es eine "Casino Royale"-Kritik von Moriarty... [...] CASINO ROYALE is the rebirth of James Bond, and it is the first entry in the series since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE that can be called an excellent film, and not just a "good James Bond movie." Somehow, the combination of screenwriting team Purvis & Wade (responsible for some of the worst screenplays in the entire series) and the dreaded Paul Haggis has resulted in a lean and efficient script. It not only effectively adapts the Ian Fleming novel, but it also expands up on it in ways that acknowledge the film's status as a giant franchise action film without compromising any integrity. There are a few choices I'm not crazy about, but overall, I am impressed and amazed. Martin Campbell has stepped up with his best-directed film to date. Campbell is a professional, and I think he does solid work most of the time, but he's hardly an artist. Here, I think he raises his game, and the result is something special, something with a real pulse, a vital film that absolutely rehabilitates the character and that delivers Daniel Craig to superstardom, fully formed. [...]

[14.11.2006]
Bei AICN gibt es eine "Casino Royale"-Kritik von Massawyrm... [...] I really dug the hell out of Casino Royale and for anyone who enjoys Bond, but really is open to a toughened up retooling - this comes Recommended. Taken as a reboot, it's one hell of a start, and if Craig can keep up this level of intensity for a few more films, he'll easily be remembered as one of the best of the Bond's, if not simply Bond to an entire new generation. But it can't in any way be taken as a continuation of the series, unless you consider it a prequel. And if you're an old school Bond nut that quotes chapter and verse and feels that an utter lack of Q, gadgets or smirked one liners is a betrayal of the franchise, and would prefer your Royale...with cheese...you're probably going to be quite let down by Bond 21. Die NZ berichtet über das Casting für "Casino Royale"... [...] [...] Overall a good film and a great Bond film. Craig and the filmmakers have brought a surprisingly fresh take and reinvented the character. It gives the you the ability to ignore the existence of the previous films, and that is not a bad thing. However, it's a little too full of itself - like a kid with a new toy - and it will be interesting to see if Eon have the guts to do the same again on the next one when they don't have Fleming source material to lead them. [...]

Die NZ meldet... [...]
November Weltpremiere in London.

[...] I found Casino Royale to be good but not great. It's a good reset point for the franchise and on that note it's an excellent re-introduction to the Bond universe. And yet, the film never aspires to reach the level of greatness of its history...in simple terms, it's better than Die Another Day, but nowhere near as good as Goldeneye and it is far outside the realms of any film from the Connery era. It'll attract new fans and put off old ones in equal measure, but it's definitely worth a look. Just try to take Casino Royale on its own merits and you'll find a good old-fashioned spy flick executed slickly but with a knowing glint in its eye.
Oh, and the scene at the airport, in front of the metal detectors - See if you can spot who has the tiniest cameo appearance ever. [...]

[...] Daniel Craig is the best Bond since Connery.
He plays the gritty, tougher-than-nails secret agent novelist Ian Fleming meant the world to see.
With his bulked-up frame, intense blue eyes and don't-mess-with-me attitude, Craig makes Brosnan look a bit girlie in comparison. [...]
The film includes the most disturbing Bond torture scene ever filmed and shows 007 will not be pulling any punches from now on. [...]
Gone are the cartoon-like trappings of past films such as the invisible cars and outlandish villains - and some fans may be disappointed by the noticeable absence of old favourites Q and Miss Moneypenny. But the presence of Dame Judi Dench brings authority and humour to her role as Bond's boss M.
Casino Royale was Fleming's first Bond novel. The title was used for a spoof starring David Niven in 1967.
This, though, is the first attempt to bring Fleming's original vision to life.
And, to be frank, like the novel, it suffers from a lack of sharpness in the plot.
You will need to concentrate as you follow the story because, running at a whopping two hours and 20 minutes, the movie is 20 minutes too long.
A healthy bit of editing would have avoided confusing scenes where some characters appear and disappear inexplicably. [...]
Fortunately, the action sequences more than compensate for the complicated plot.
Campbell has ditched the computer-generated imagery and gone back to real stunts - which give Casino Royale a real awe factor. [...]
French actress Eva Green plays the main Bond girl Vesper Lynd.
And she manages to bring out the soft side of Bond that has rarely been seen in previous films.
But beyond that, she still has the perfect assets for a Bond girl that have wowed generations of red-blooded males. [...]

[22.07.2006]
CS! meldet... It was announced today by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, that the 22nd James Bond adventure will be released by Columbia Pictures on May 2, 2008 with Daniel Craig reprising the role of the legendary British secret agent.
The story for the latest James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions has yet to be announced.
"As we wrap production on 'Casino Royale' we couldn't be more excited about the direction the franchise is heading with Daniel Craig. Daniel has taken the origins of Ian Fleming's James Bond portraying, with emotional complexity, a darker and edgier 007," said Wilson and Broccoli.

[01.07.2006]
Wie CS! meldet, wurden auf der Cinema Expo International in Amsterdam 20 Minuten von "Casino Royale" gezeigt... [...] The footage showed off Craig as a grittier Bond, with scenes of more intense, visceral hand-to-hand combat than 007 has tackled in recent pics. One black-and-white scene flashed back to Bond's first ever (brutal and hard-to-pull-off) kill as an agent, as well as his (much more sleek and signature) second assassination.
Also introducing the pic was one of the new Bond girls, Caterina Murino, and the reel featured some sultry scenes between her and Craig. For any gearheads, Bond's new ride also got some screen time, as did high-octane chase scenes, including one of Craig following a baddie up and down a construction site with aerial jumps and twists. CS! meldet... SPOILER !!! Reuters reports that (spoiler ahead!) in the opening scene of Sony and MGM's Casino Royale, James Bond (Daniel Craig) will pursue his latest enemy in a four-wheel W190 bulldozer supplied by Fiat, the Italian industrial group.
Although its vehicles have appeared in a number of movies including the Alfa Romeo Spider in The Graduate, it is the first time that Fiat will have one starring in a Bond movie.
"We are very happy and proud of it," said spokeswoman Silvia Cassani, who assured that none of the bulldozers, excavators or loaders supplied to the movie's producers were destroyed in the mayhem usually associated with a Bond action scene.
Ford Motor will also be using the movie to promote the Aston Martin, which will be driven by Bond after being behind the wheel of a BMW 750 iL in previous adventures.

DH meldet... Screen International reports that "Casino Royale" has wrapped its shooting schedule in the Bahamas. The Caribbean location plays itself in the film and doubles for Madagascar where a major action scene takes place.
On April 6th the main unit returned to Prague where the famous gambling scene between Bond and villain Le Chiffre is being filmed. Shooting wraps there at the end of May in the Czech spa town Karlovy Vary, doubling as Montenegro.
Filming will then move to Venice Italy for exteriors for five days, after which it returns to Pinewood Studios in the UK where the climactic action scenes will make use of a 20-foot deep water tank on Pinewood's famous 007 stage.
According to WebMac, one mystery that remains is where the production is going to film a major action scene set at the Miami International Airport and the surrounding city. The sequence is one of the largest in the film and it's unlikely the entire sequence was completed during the production's limited stay in the Caribbean.

Die NZ lästert mit... [...]

DH meldet... Daniel Craig told BBC One & Ananova his portrayal of James Bond makes the agent more human and fallible - "I just wanted to see him make a few mistakes. I want to make the audience believe that it's all going to go wrong and then when it goes right it's much more exciting."
He said he has found filming chase scenes and fight sequences demanding - "Every day you pick up an injury and you're battered and bruised. If you're not physically fit then it's difficult to get through."
He said Bond fans would not be disappointed by the new movie - "I'm a Bond fan. If I go and see a Bond movie there are certain things I think should be in it. And they're there. We've got them in spades."

Moviehole meldet... The rumour mill has closed for business on "Casino Royale", with EON letting slip the bit of paper that has a confirmed cast on it today.
Hot newcomer Eva Green ("Kingdom of Heaven") has won the much-coveted role of Vespa Lynd, the resident femme fatale of Daniel Craig's first MI6 jaunt.
In addition to that pair of foxy storks, Jeffrey Wright ("Syriana") has also answered a call to feature in the film. He'll play Felix Leiter.
And, of course, yesterday we announced that Danish-born actor Mads Mikkelsen has accepted the role of Le Chiffre, Bond's nemesis in the film.
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, "We are thrilled that Eva and Mads have joined the cast of 'Casino Royale' completing a first rate international cast. They bring exceptional talent to the characters Ian Fleming described so vividly in his first James Bond novel. After an extensive search we have found the perfect actress. Eva is one of France's most accomplished young actresses, now receiving international acclaim. She brings to the complex role of Vesper an exciting combination of enigmatic and seductive beauty."
It's believed that Green bet out such strong competition as Rose Byrne, Thandie Newton, Olivia Wilde and Kimberley Davies.
"Vesper is a pivotal role in 'Casino Royale' and it takes much more than beauty to make this role work," said Amy Pascal, Chairman of the Columbia Pictures Motion Picture Group. "When you think about the great James Bond adventures, of course you think about action and espionage, but you need to have palpable sexual tension in the movie and in casting Vesper, we really needed to up the ante, because this character is very much an equal to Bond and central to our story. We believe Eva as Vesper, Mads as Le Chiffre and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter are perfect additions to our cast and we couldn't be more excited about the way this project has come together."
"Likewise Mads has such a compelling onscreen presence and his riveting performances in 'Open Hearts' and 'Adam's Apples' convinced both us and director Martin Campbell that he was ideal for the role of Le Chiffre", says Wilson and Broccoli.
A number of other actors have also won roles in the film, including Giancarlo Giannini as Mathis, Caterina Murino as Solonge, Simon Abkarian as Dimitrios, Tobias Menzies as Villiers, Ivana Milicevic as Valenka, Clemens Schik as Kratt, Ludger Pistor as Mendel, and Claudio Santamaria as Carlos.
Looks like it's official John, no custom-Cleese Q this time around. Tissue?
[16.02.2006]
CS! meldet... Casino Royale director Martin Campbell confirmed on Wednesday that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (King Arthur) will play the evil Le Chiffre in the 21st James Bond installment.
Campbell, Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were on-hand at a press conference today at the Czech Republic's Barrandov Studios.
Asked who will play the Bond girl, Campbell revealed the choice is now down to "two or three" but added "you'll just have to wait to find out." Eva Green and Olivia Wilde are thought to be the finalists.
Variety says we will see more insight into M's (Dench) back story than they ever have to date in the film with a scene set in her London apartment, constructed in modernist beige by Barrandov, complete with Asian art and Tanqueray gin cocktail service.
Bond himself will show his more sensitive side, said Campbell, in that the film, based on the first of Ian Fleming's Bond books, reveals how he became "the Bond we all know and love."
The cast and crew jet off to the Bahamas shortly to shoot a chase sequence at seaside construction site, then will be back to Prague for studio and location work, and Italy and the U.K.'s Pinewood.
[15.02.2006]
Moviehole meldet... Casting is expected to be announced shortly for the remaining roles in "Casino Royale".
Interestingly enough, after endless talk of A-list actresses being up for the lead Bond girl role, the role of Vespa Lynd now looks set to go to a relative unknown.
The two lasses currently on the short-list are Olivia Wilde, who played Alex in "The OC", and Eva Green, from "Kingdom of Heaven".
Meantime, seems the role of the film's villain has gone to Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, recently seen as Tristan in "King Arthur".
Finally, CommanderBond.net says Swiss actor and rapper Carlos Leal has won the role of a croupier in the film.

Sony's "Casino Royale" kicked off its long-anticipated production in Prague on Friday. Although the globe-spanning shoot has locked down exotic locales and an intrigue-laden script, at least two things are still missing: a leading lady and a worthy opponent for Agent 007. Although it isn't unprecedented for a studio to begin principal photography on a film with two major cast elements unsettled, it is unusual for a project of this budget and scope. However, a source familiar with the Martin Campbell-helmed production said scenes involving James Bond's love interest don't begin for more than a month, and the studio still has some breathing room before compromising the film's schedule. "They're talking to three to four girls right now," "Royale" scribe Paul Haggis said. "Every week I read there's a new Bond girl, and I call them and they say, No, you idiot."

Filming starts Feb. 23 - and I'll have to come back and catch a glimpse of Daniel Craig as the new 007. [...]

AICN meldet... [...] I know - without a doubt, 100% sure, honest-to God - that actress Rose Byrne (WICKER PARK) got the Vesper Lynd role in CASINO ROYALE. Eon's making an official announcement on Friday.
If you're interested: Seal isn't playing the role of henchman Solari anymore either ... it's been grabbed by a French actor named Seydina Baldi; Italian actress Caterina Murino has locked the role of Solonge, Demetrius's girlfriend; and, speaking of Demetrius, the "true" villain of CR (no longer Le Chiffre) is going to be played by Simon Abkarian. Cinematical meldet... [...] London's Daily Mail is reporting that little-known Australian actress Rose Byrne has won the role of Vesper Lynd, Casino Royale's very own Bond girl. Though the official announcement will not be made until Friday, the Mail knows its Bond: it was the first paper to break the news that Pierce Brosnan was out, and also the first with confirmation that Daniel Craig was in. So, if we're going to believe any press rumors, this one is probably better than most.
The Mail also offers an amusing tidbit about the audition process, revealing that even casting a Bond movie requires spy skills. "She had to give a special password, Alcazar, to get into the audition." [...]

Sony Pictures has set a January 30 start date for filming Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film to star Daniel Craig, says Variety.
The trouble is, beyond Craig and Judi Dench -- who will reprise her role as M -- most of the cast has not been set for the Martin Campbell-directed film.
The most glaring unknown is the role of the female lead. After going out to Charlize Theron, 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson now are auditioning a fresh crop of leading ladies.
Four actresses are reading for the part this week in London with Craig, who's just off the set of Warner Bros.' The Visiting. The hope is that a decision will be reached by next week.
The trade says that names being bandied about are Species beauty Natasha Henstridge and Australian actress Kimberly Davies. It was also speculated at one point that Angelina Jolie was in the running.

Digital Spy meldet... Quentin Tarantino is unhappy with James Bond producers.
The director claims that he suggested the idea of filming Casino Royale to former Bond star Pierce Brosnan, who has since been replaced by Daniel Craig.
"I'm annoyed that the James Bond producers never even called me up to talk to me about it because I can tell you they would not be making Casino Royale if I hadn't talked about it first," Tarantino is quoted by the Sunday Mirror as saying.
"They should have called me. Especially since they are taking my idea and they are taking the publicity I gave them towards that idea. They should have at least out of courtesy had coffee with me."
