"I like alternating between playing good guys and bad guys. That way you keep audiences on their toes about your work and have them thinking, ‘Ah, which one will he be in this movie?’. Unlike the rest of the cast I was unfamiliar with the actual video game. I took the role primarily because I like Paul Anderson, his work and his mind. I think he’s got a really fascinating and playfully perverse imagination. I know he cast me as Spence because I have a face people seem to trust without question and he wanted to play on my double-edged harmless and innocent looks.
Spence is an interesting character to play because he’s lost his memory when the audience first glimpses him and he doesn’t really remember anything until near the end. He’s a commando but can’t recall his training or what sort of person he was. Spence is a big moaner and often expresses what the audience is thinking. That gets him on their side and sneakily underlines one of Paul’s neatest tricks to astonish and jolt audiences rigid. When his memory suddenly floods back and his latent commando mode kicks back in, that’s when Spence is revealed as a calculating, cold-blooded murder and becomes dangerous to those who trusted him the most."
"I keep having flashbacks to the Undead scenes and they still creep me out. Paul has used the Undead in ways that are really nightmarish and which call to mind the hellish work of such medieval artists as Bosch. It was a brilliant idea on his part to use trained dancers as the Undead and have all their body movements choreographed down to the smallest twitch. I wasn’t prepared for how disturbing they were going to look and I couldn’t wait for Paul to shout ‘Cut’ just so the outstretched arms and clutching hands would stop for a while and let me regain my composure. If I had any initial doubts about the film being scary, they completely vanished during these moments. I never had any reservations about Paul’s ability to make an audience jump out of their seat. That’s part of his directorial skill. But being able to create terrifying images that worm their way into the subconscious to keep you on edge is a real art. And that’s what Paul is clearly doing here. Scary movie lovers are in for a real treat with Resident Evil."
